 Experience is the actual doing.


 The perfection of art appreciation will never be possible without experiencing art.
 All art forms available to us demands experience.

 Experience of art is subjective  

 Our judgment of art is highly personal and individual. Any claims that his/her experience with art
is better than others proves to be impossible. Not everybody will agree with our own judgment and
experience with art.

 personal (public display or expression),  


 social (celebration or to affect collective behavior), and  
 physical (utilitarian).

 Personal or Individual Function  


 artists have their personal reason as they try to express themselves. An artist may create out of a
need for self-expression or gratification. The artist was trying to provide an aesthetic experience
both for self and viewers.

 Fernando Amorsolo painted “Mango Pickers, 1936” (and others) to showcase the life and real
experience of Filipinos working in the field (especially in Bicol) and for more audience to
appreciate the beauty of nature.
FUNCTIONS OF ART

 Social Function
 As a social being, man associates with those around him. Art is an avenue to extend his sense of
b e l o n g i n g n e s s a n d c o n n e c t i o n w i t h p e o p l e . A r t g a t h e r s m a n a s o n e f a m i l y a n d c o m m u n i t y, t h r o u g h
celebration like festivities, choral singing or group dancing in religious rituals.

 Examples are architectural structure and churches. Almost all art forms are created to be seen or
used primarily in public situation.

 Physical Function  

 O u r h e a l t h i s p r i o r i t y, a r c h i t e c t u r a l s t r u c t u r e l i k e h o s p i t a l s , p h y s i c a l t h e r a p y c e n t e r a n d
laboratories are there to assist us for health care. Music and dance perform an important role when
our bodies need to rejuvenate and revitalize.

 Art as an Imitation

 For Plato, when one ascribes beauty to another person, he refers to an imperfect beauty that
p a r t i c i p a t e s o n l y i n t h e f o r m o f b e a u t y i n t h e Wo r l d o f F o r m s .

 Art as a Representation  

 Aristotle considered art as an aid to philosophy in revealing truth. It allows for the experience of
pleasure. art also has an ability to be instructive and teach its audience things about life; thus, it is
cognitive as well.
