At the end of the lesson you will able to:
DESCRIBES THE TYPES OF RESEARCH
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
PURPOSE: explain , and gain insight and PURPOSE: gain insight about phenomena
understanding of phenomena through through intensive collection of narrative data.
focused collection of numerical data
DATA ANALYSIS: raw data are numbers DATA ANALYSIS: raw data are words
Quantitative Research is use to examine the relationship between
variables, quantify the problem by way of generating numerical data
and explain the phenomenon by way of gathering numerical data
or data that can be analysed using statistical tools quantittaive data
collection methods include various forms of surveys such online
surveys, questionnaire surveys, mobile surveys, face to face
interviews, telephone interviews, longitudinal studies, data mining
using meta-analysis, online polls, and systematics observations.
Quantitative approaches are best used to answer what, when, and
who questions are not well suited to how and why questions.
Characteristics of Quantitative Research.
Quantitative Research involves studies which data concerned can be analysed in
terms of numbers. Below are the characteristics of quantitative research.
It is reliable and objective.
It uses statistics to generalize findings.
It reduces and restructures a complex problem to a limit number of variables.
It looks connections between variables and establishes cause and effect
relationships in highly controlled circumstances.
It tests theories or hypothesis.
It assumes that the sample is representative of the population.
The subjectivity of its methodology is a secondary concern.
It deals with the details of the subject.
Strengths of Quantitative Research
Quantitative research provides data that can be expressed in numbers and which are usually gathered
by survey questionnaires from large numbers of respondents randomly selected for inclusion. The data can
be tabulated and interpreted using descripted statistics like t-tests, ANNOVAs ,or multiple regression
correlations. The following are the advantages of quantitative research.
Since quantitative research uses numbers and figures to denote a particular thing, this kind of research
requires you to focus your full attention on the object of your study.
Quantitative research is described as objective research in contrast to qualitative research that is
subjective.
The data gathered is precise and reliable.
Weakness of Quantitative Research
Not all research problems or questions can be answered by quantitative methodology.
There are natural limitations. The use of quantitative research is weak where it is
inappropriate or improper. Quantitative research involves planned and structured
questionnaires or checklists. It leads to limited outcomes because the questionnaires contain
close ended questions. The following are the limitations of quantitative research.
Improper representation of the target population might hinder the research for achieving its
desired purposed and objectives.
Related secondary data are sometimes not available or accessing available data is difficult
to obtain through structured data collection instruments.
Lack of resources for data collection. Self-reported information obtained from
questionnaires maybe inaccurate or incomplete.
Inability to control the environment.
Studies are expensive and time-consuming.
