TO PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PREPARED BY: JOHN BENEDICT C. GOJO CRUZ, RPm, LPT “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
DEFINITION OF TERMS PERSONAL PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT PERSONAL Refers to a particular person, individual or a body. It also relates to an individual or an individual’s character, conduct, motivation or private affairs. (Merriam-Webster) Examples: • I would like to share my personal opinions. • Most of what I have are for personal effects. • I would like to spend my personal holidays abroad. PERSONALITY The American Psychological Association, adapted from Encyclopedia of Psychology, refers to personality as individual differences in characteristics patters of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Personality is derived from Latin word “persona” which means a “mask.” PERSONALITY The study of personality focuses on two broad areas: Understanding individual differences in particular personality characteristics such as sociability or irritability. Understanding how various parts of a person come together as a whole.
It is a pattern of body habits, traits, attitudes,
and ideas of an individual organized externally into roles and statuses and as they relate internally to motivations, goals and various aspects of selfhood. DEVELOPMENT Refers to the systematic use of scientific knowledge to meet specific objectives; it is an act, process, or result of developing or a process of social transformation that is based on complex, cultural, and environmental factors and their interactions. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Is the general development of body, attitude, identity, behavior, lifestyle, and thought processes where one can develop the self or the areas that need to be reworked to become suitable to the world. It covers varied activities that improve self- awareness and identity; develop talents and potentials; assess and improve personal skills; enhance the quality of life; and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations. Personal development is also a method of helping an individual polish his/her existing personality traits. PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT Is the systematic development of the organized pattern of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and attitudes that makes a person unique or distinct from others. It occurs through the continuous interaction of disposition, character, and environment. Personality development is more related to the development of the inner self, the end result of which is associated to how you keep yourself happy. AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT HEALTH This area is about your body. You can improve your life by having a good healthy body. In order to develop good physical health, you must have a healthy diet, exercise regularly, get enough sleep and rest, and consistently take care of your body. In order to maintain a good mental and social well-being, you must possess a good opinion of yourself, develop good interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship, enjoy the present moment, and find work-study-life balance. AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FINANCES To live comfortable life, maintain a family, or just follow your dreams it is fundamental that you have enough money of good financial capacity. Itis important to manage your finances until you reach financial independence. Being a student with no source of income, you can begin developing your financial independence by building a series of passive income systems that generate money every month for your needs. AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SOCIABILITY Isthe tendency or quality of liking to meet and be in the company of other people. Some people think you must be born with this ability if you want to build genuine relationships. In reality this is not true and social skills are just any other skill: you can learn and practice them. Being honest and genuine toward others is essential in developing your sociability. AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SPIRITUALITY Spirituality means the quality of being concerned with the human spirit as opposed to material or physical things. Developing spirituality means to improve one’s own being by learning how to control your emotions, exercising self-discipline, and making decisions that are not contrary to the values you have chosen to live by. AREAS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT HABITS A habit is a recurrent, often unconscious, pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition. It is also an action done on a daily basis. If you want to change, your habits have to change. Habits may be good or bad. ADOLESCENCE AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Personal development plays an important role during the adolescence period. It is the period when adolescents undergo significant changes in all areas of development. Adolescence is divided into three stages: Early adolescence (11-14 years) Middle adolescence (15-17 years) Late adolescence (18-21 years) Adolescence starts with puberty during which different biological changes occur. They also experience changes in their capability for reasoning about abstract concepts and problems. They become inquisitive in terms of philosophy, religion, and politics. They ask questions about themselves and their self-identity. ADOLESCENCE AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Their relationship with family and friends may be affected positively or negatively. Itis also important to consider the spiritual beliefs of an adolescent and how these beliefs influence their personal development. There is a growing consensus that healthy development during adolescence contributes to good mental health and can prevent future mental health problems. Itis important that we must protect and guide our youth for they hold the future of the next generation. REFERENCE Jumamil, A.N. (2018). Personal Development for Senior High School.
