What is Link aggregation?

 Link aggregation is also called port trunk or port aggregation.

 Link aggregation is to aggregate several ports into a aggregation

group to implement load balance of in/out flows on each
member port.

 This improves the reliability of the connections at the same time.

When a link is disconnected, the traffic will be reassigned
among the remaining link automatically.

 Link aggregation is implemented on the data link layer.

Benefits of Link Aggregation

 Bandwidth is increased by bundling multiple physical links to one logical link;

 Reliability is improved. When one link (e.g. link D) is down, traffics will be re-
distributed among remaining three links A, B and C automatically;
 L2 Loop is avoided;
 Link transmission flexibility and link redundancy can be realized.

Prerequisites of Link Aggregation

 Physical parameters on both ends of aggregated links must be

identical
 Number of links to be aggregated
 Rate of links to be aggregated
 Links to be aggregated must be in mode of full duplex.

 Logical parameters on both ends of aggregated links must be

identical
 Basic configurations of ports in the same aggregation group must be
identical, which include STP, QoS, VLAN, port and other related
configurations.

Link aggregation Mode

 Static trunk
Static trunk directly adds multiple physical ports to the trunk group, thus
forming a logic port. This mode is not suitable for observing the state of
the link aggregation port.

 LACP
Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) follows IEEE 802.3ad standards.
It converges multiple physical ports into the trunk group to form a logic
port. It automatically generates aggregation to obtain the maximum
bandwidth.

Static Trunk

 In static trunk mode, multiple physical ports are added to one

trunk group to form one logical interface.

In this mode, it is not convenient to monitor the state of

aggregate port, which leads to interruption of partial services.

LACP

 LACP: Link Aggregation Control Protocol (IEEE802.3ad).

 Provide a standard negotiation mode for devices exchanging

data. In this mode, system forms and enables aggregation link
according to its configuration to receive and send packets. After
aggregation link is formed, LACP is used to maintain link state.
When aggregate conditions change, it automatically adjusts or
disaggregates link aggregation.

 Packet length is 128 bytes

 VLAN tag is not carried in packet

Protocol type value is 0x8809, sub-type value is 0x01(LACP), and current version
number is 0x01.
Actor field contains system and port information, including system ID, port priority,
and key etc.
 Partner field contains peer system information currently saved in local system
 The others are reserve fields.
