Numerical Problems on Interference
Interference

1. In a double slit experiment a light of λ = 5460 Å is exposed to slits which are


0.1 mm a part. The screen is placed 2 m away from the slits. What is the 
angular position of the 10th  maximum and  1st minimum?
2. Light waves of wave length 650 nm and 500 nm produce interference  fringes 
on a screen at a  distance  of 1 m from a double slit of separation  0.5 mm.
Find the least distance of a point from  the central  maximum  where  the
bright fringe due to both sources  coincide.
3.  Two slits separated by a distance of 0.2 mm are illuminated by a
monochromatic light of wave length 550 nm. Calculate the fringe width  on a 
screen at a distance of 1 m from the slits.
4.  Light of wave length 500 nm forms an interference pattern on  a  screen  at a 
distance of 2 m from the slit. If 100 fringes are formed within a  distance of 5 
cm on the screen, find the distance between the slits
5. Two coherent sources whose intensity ratio is 36:1 produce interference 
fringes.  Deduce the ratio of maximum intensity to minimum intensity.
6. Calculate the thickness of air film at the 10 th dark ring in a Newton’s rings 
system, viewed  normally by a reflected light of wave length 500 nm. The diameter 
of the 10th dark ring is 2 mm.
7.  In a Newton’s ring experiment, the diameter of the 5th ring is 0.30 cm and 
diameter of the 15th ring is 0.62 cm. Find the diameter of the 25th ring
8. A soap film of refractive index 1.33 and thickness 5000 Å is exposed to white  light. 
What  wavelengths in the visible region are reflected?
9.  In a Newton’s rings experiment the diameter of the 15th ring was found to be  0.59 
cm and that  of the 5th ring is 0.336 cm. If the radius of curvature  of  the lens is 
100 cm, find the wave length of the light
10. Newton’s rings are observed in the reflected light of wave length 5900 Å. The 
diameter of 10 th dark ring is 0.5 cm. Find the radius of curvature  of the lens used.
11. A Newton’s ring experiment is performed with a source of light having two
wavelengths, λ1 = 6 × 10–5 cm and λ2 = 4.5 × 10–5 cm. It is found that the nth dark
ring due to λ1 coincides with (n + 1)th dark ring due to λ 2. If the radius of
curvature of the curved surface is 90 cm, find the diameter of the nth dark ring
for λ1.
12. In a Newton’s ring experiment, the diameter of a dark ring is measured to
be 2 mm. The medium in between plano-convex lens and glass plate is air.
What would be the diameter of the same ring when the air film is replaced
by a liquid of refractive index of 1.6
13. A soap film of refractive index 1.33 is illuminated with light of different
wavelengths at an angle of 45°. There is complete destructive interference
for λ = 5890 Å. Find the thickness of the film.
14. In a double slit interference pattern at a point, the 10th order maximum is
observed for light of wavelength 7000 Å. What order will be visible if the
source of light is replaced by light of wavelength 5000 Å.
15. In a Young’s double slit experiment, the angular width of a fringe found on
a distant screen is 0.1°. The wavelength of light used is 6000 Å. What is the
spacing between the slits?
