The Learner demonstrates understanding of
characteristic features of the Medieval,
Renaissance and Baroque period music
OBJECTIVES

• describes the musical elements of selected vocal and


instrumental music of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music;
• explains the performance practice (setting, composition, role of
composers/performers, and audience) during Medieval,
Renaissance and Baroque periods;
• performs music from Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Period;
DISCUSSION MECHANICS

• The chosen participants will answer the question

• Those participants who would likely to fall on nos. 4, 8, 12,


16, will showcase their talent, Unless, they can only
answer the question if they can recite at least 3 shared
answer of the other participants. They can also chose who
will take the next question/share their talents.
The medieval period, also known as the Middle
Ages or the Dark Ages, started at approximately
400 A.D. and ends in early 1400 A.D.
MEDIEVAL This was an era of war, famine and chaos and
PERIOD people were searching for security and
protection.
(700-1400)
The Middle Ages covered the fall of the Roman
Empire until the rise of Ottoman Empire.
FEUDAL SYSTEM

• Was the form of government


established during the middle ages. This
system is divided the society into five
classes- the king, the bishop, the baron,
the lord, and the peasant.
Roman Emperor Constantine issued the
Edict of Milan to end the persecution of
Christians.

Black death and Bubonic plaque spread


across Europe and cost many lives.

Medieval Art and architecture mostly


featured cathedrals, monasteries, and
other religious structures.
During the medieval period, vocal
music dominated the music scene.
There are no records of instrumental
music.

CHURCH MODE
The Gregorian mode, one of the eight scales in the Gregorian
chant.
MONOPHONIC – was mainly used
during the early part of the Middle Ages,
this refers to only one music line.
HARMONY
AND
TONALITY
POLYPHONIC- was developed from
combining several musical lines.
• Was mainly sacred and
vocal music such as
MUSICAL plainchant, conductus,
FORM masses, and motets,
instrumental estampie
and secular vocal songs.
One of the distinctive music forms that
marked the period was the plainchant
or the plain song.

The plainchant is a form of prayer song


PLAINCHANT that is purely vocal, monophonic, and
intended for church use only.

Pope Gregory the great initiated the


compilation of a plainsong called the
Gregorian chant.
NEUMES
• The neume is the
predecessor of the present
musical notation. It shows
the rise and fall of voices as
a guide for singers to
remember the melody of
the song.
The Gregorian chant has the
following qualities:
• Is in a cappella
• Has free rhythm
CONCLUSION • Is sung by monks
• Uses church modes
• Is written in a four-line staff
• Is written in Latin language
• Is sung in solo or group.

SECULAR MUSIC

• Not all musicians were regulated by the church


during the medieval period. There was secular
music known as court music that became
popular during the latter part of the period.
TROUBADOURS

• The troubadours were traveling musicians who


performed in different places to entertain people
with their music about courtly love, chivalry, and
romance.
TROUBADOURS

• Troubadours may either be noble people or


people with rank, or knights playing for lords.
The chanson and the canso were the songs of
the troubadours.
MINSTRELS

• While the troubadours had higher ranks in


medieval society, the minstrels were the
servants hired to serve in courts.
JONGLEURS

• Similar to minstrels, jongleurs were also hired


to entertain crowds with acrobatic tricks.

CHANSON

• A chanson is a French secular song during the


medieval period.

•It is a popular lyric driven song


based on poems.
CHANSON

•A singer specializing in chansons is


known as a chansonnier. Meanwhile, a
canso is a troubadour's formal love song.
COMPOSERS

ADAM DELA HALLE

• was one of the popular composers of the medieval period. He


was also known as Adam le Bossu or Adam the Hunchback.
• He was a poet and musician, who was known for his chansons
and poetic debates (Jeux-partis).
• One of his famous works is the musical play "Le Jeu de Robin
et Marion."
