    ABOUT THE POET…
     Adrienne C. Rich (May 16, 1929 – March 27, 2012) was
    born in Baltimore. She was an American poet, essayist and
    feminist. She was known as “one of the most widely read
    and influential poets of the second half of the 20th century”,
    and was credited with bringing “the oppression of women
    to the forefront of poetic discourse.” She published twenty-
    five volumes of poetry, three collections of essays and more
    than half a dozen other writings.
     The poem “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” is a reflection of her
    defying point of view against oppression of women in the
    society.

    Raja Ram Mohan Roy was known for his efforts to abolish the practices of Sati and Child
    Marriage.
    Post-Independence, feminism focused on fair treatment of women after marriage
    and right to political parity.

    Women Empowerment in late 20th century
    Still women continue to be suppressed in some parts of the country…
    Women feel uncomfortable expressing themselves as they fear judgement. We need
    to bring about a change in this pattern of endless subjugation of women.
    Allowing opportunities and removing their fear by providing education and knowledge will steer them
    through all these hurdles and they will finally be on the same page as that of a man, sharing equal
    responsibility and power in the society.
    An ideal society must be the one without any gender
    inequality…
    SUMMARY OF
    THE POEM:
    • The poem captures the themes of
    male chauvinism and dominance
    in the society, burdens and
    struggles of marriage.
    • Here, Aunt Jennifer, the
    protagonist, is symbolic of all the
    women who are the victims of
    male subjugation.

    Poet describes Tigers as Not scared of


    men, Brave, Sure-footed & Chivalric.
    • Aunt Jennifer’s fingers flutter
    through the wool and she finds
    it difficult even to pull the
    ivory needle.
    • It conveys her weak and feeble
    nature as she tries to help
    herself to go beyond what is
    permitted to her.
    • The choice of words represent
    certain mental discomfort that
    even affects her physical
    existence…
    • The Uncle’s wedding band feels
    heavy to her, reflecting the
    burden of the relationship she
    shares unwillingly with her
    husband.
    • It is indicative of her
    powerlessness in a world where
    she is being subjugated by her
    husband.
    • Where weddings are supposed to
    make lives happier, we find Aunt
    Jennifer bowed down by its
    constraints.
    • Even after her death, her fingers
    would still highlight the torture
    she faced.
    • Even death would not liberate
    her.
    • Her lifeless body would reveal
    the oppression and ordeal that
    ringed her.
    • But the TIGER she created
    would always be proud and
    unafraid.
    We must really mull over calling ourselves SOCIAL ANIMALS if we regard
    men to be superior to women…
    WITH EDUCATION WITHIN THE REACH OF MOST FAMILIES, WOMEN
    NOW ACHIEVE WHAT SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE FEW DECADES AGO…
