CHESS PIECES
KING
The most important chess piece.
It is also considered as one of the
weakest.
Moves only one square in any
direction.
QUEEN
The most powerful piece.
It moves in any one straight
direction.
ROOK
May move to any square as far
as it wants, but only forward,
backward, and to the sides.
BISHOP
Maymove as far as it wants, but
only diagonally.
KNIGHT
Moves in an “L” shape.
PAWN
Moves forward, but captures
diagonally.
It can never move backwards.
CHESS TERMS
CASTLING
The
player moves his king 2
squares over one side and then
move the rook from that side’s
corner on the square next to the
king.
CHECK
Is
the result of a move that
places the opposing king under
an immediate threat of capture
by one or sometimes two of the
opponent’s pieces.
CHECKMATE
A situationin which one player’s
king is threatened with capture
(or in check) having no move to
avoid the threat, thus ending the
game.

pawn capture which

player moves 2 squares forward.
