ZERO ENERGY BUILDING BY

‘SOLAR TRIGENERATION’

GUIDED BY:
PROF. SHARANABASAPPA Z.

PTD BY:
AJAZ PARVEZ J KAUTHALKAR
ZERO ENERGY BUILDING
• It is the idea that any building can meet its energy
requirements from low cost, zero polluting renewable sources.
E.g., sun.
• Energy Generation house = Energy Consumption house

Energy consumption is lowered by

• Using efficient equipments with added insulation of walls,
ceilings & floors.

• Free solar day lighting, natural ventilation, combined use of

energy like Tri-generation.
SOLAR TRIGENERATION
• Is defined as the simultaneous generation of power, heating and cooling with
a single Energy source (sun).
POWER GENERATION
 Electric power from sun can be generated by solar cells
(photovoltaic cells).
 The DC power produced, can be stored in a rechargeable
battery & can be used to power the equipments.
WATER HEATING
WATER HEATING
• Solar heating systems generally consists of solar thermal
collectors, water storage tank, interconnecting pipes and a
fluid system to move the heat from collector to tank.
• An evacuated tube collector is an efficient solar water
heater.
• Each Evacuated tube consists of outer Borosilicate glass
tube & inner tube is of aluminum or copper fin attached to a
metal pipe coated with Barium.

• This converts solar radiations to heat upto 150+ degree

centigrade.
COOLING
COOLING

• When there is a source of inexpensive thermal energy at a

temperature of 100 to 200°C we can use absorption
refrigeration cycle.

• Absorption chillers are used for cooling which does not use
an electric compressor; Instead, the absorption device uses a
heat source.

• These are often classified as heat-driven systems.

• Used for commercial, residential and industrial installations.

ADVANTAGES
• Isolation from future energy price increases and also
taxes/penalties.

• Reduced or No electrical, gas bills and very less transmission

losses.

• Environmentally friendly (pollution free) .

• System can work upto 25-30 years with low maintenance.

• Resale value of these building can recover higher initial costs

with energy system.
DISADVANTAGES

• Initial costs can be higher because to understand, and

qualify for ZEB subsidies and installation of Solar
Trigeneration.

• Very few designers have the necessary skills to build ZEBs.

• Efficiency is moderate which depends on climate & location

of building.

CASE STUDY
World's first Net Zero Energy Buildings powered by Solar
Trigeneration.
The system is implemented at Audubon centre at Debs park, near Los
Angeles, USA, & is World’s first Net Zero Energy building by Solar
Trigeneration.

The Audubon centre’s 5000 square foot office and conference facility is
powered by solar Trigeneration system, that features a 25 KW electric power
system where the energy is stored in a bank of batteries.

The centre is cooled by a 10-ton solar absorption cooling system.

The thermal collectors heat the water to temperatures above 100 degree
centigrade stored in a 4542.5 litres insulated tank.

Hence, it provides air-conditioning in the summer, heats the building in the

winter and provides the hot water for kitchen and bathrooms.

This 5300 sq. Ft. Building operates entirely “grid-free” & without any electric
or gas connections. Therefore the Audubon nature centre never receives any
electric or natural gas bill.... Ever....!!!!!

COST ESTIMATION

The cost of the Trigeneration system generally depends upon the building Size.
For example. a 2,500 square foot house in California with AC requires probably a
3-4 kW system. The table below gives a rough estimate of what a residential
system would
cost.

* 1 kW system X $12.00 per W = $12,000

* 2 kW system X $10.00 per W = $20,000

* 4 kW system X $9.00 per W = $36,000

* 6 kW system X $8.50 per W = $51,000

Approximate Costs
CONCLUSION

A Trigeneration system is only advisable from an economical point

if the cost of energy generated by it is lesser than that purchased from
an utility system.

 If these systems are produced in large scale, then the cost can be
minimized.

 In 2008, India also registered for this Solar Trigeneration system.
