Unit 11 Computer Networks

Assignment 2
119804
Zaynab Ali
John Dearden
Introduction
First music has asked me to create a computer network for the shop which doesn't have any
computer equipment. I will include a computer system that meets their requirements in the
computer network. They want to sell new and used music and allow customers to download
music. They want their computers to be able to connect to the internet, send a documents to a
centralized printer and upload and download music files. They want to teach customers how to
use the computers to upload and download music on to storage devices. The computer network
will need to meet their requirements and i will need to tell them the cost of all the hardware,
software and the cost of the installation.
Purpose of the network

The purpose of this network is to sell new and old music and to allow customers to
download music.

The purpose of the network is to also teach people how to download music.
Network requirements

The network must have:

● Three high spec computers

● An operating system and application software
● Shared hardware network resources
● Three network users
● Must be configured for users
● Network utilities
● Username and password to access the network
Explain why the client needs three computers

The client needs three computers because they are going to use one computer for
sales and stock control, one computer for downloading music and for the use in
classes for the people who are learning how to use mp3 devices and one
computer they will set up in the manager's office for the manager.
Explain why the client needs an operating system
and application software
The client needs application software so people can perform and complete tasks
for example they must be able to upload music, download music and they must be
able to search for different music. The operating software runs all their software for
them to use and it manages the computer hardware.
Explain why the client needs shared resources
The client needs shared resources so they don't have to get one for every
computer and they don't have to pay for the installation of each and every printer
which makes it cheaper for their company as they have to only pay for the one
printer, its installation and to connect it to the computers because they want
centralised printing.
Explain why the client needs three network users
One user will be the network administrator with full control over the network and
another user will use it for selling their products and to check the stock. They want
to teach people to download and store music so the third user will use it for
teaching them and training staff.
Explain why the network must be configured for
users
The network has to be set up specifically for the users because they have to be
able add more user and remove the existing users. They have to be able to
change password and change access rights so users only have access to what
they need. They also have to be able to set login restrictions and they have to be
able to disable user accounts.
Explain what network utilities are needed
The utilities that they need is remote desktop, instant messaging, antivirus and
firewall. They need remote desktop because if a staff is off they are able to work
from home. They will need instant messaging so they can keep customers
updated on their order. They will need antivirus software in all their computers so
their computers don't get viruses and they don't lose all their data. They will need
firewalls in their systems so their systems can’t be hacked meaning they wont lose
staff and customers data.
Explain why users need username and password
All network users need a username and password to access the computer
network because then people without the password will not be able to access the
network and they need usernames so that when the user logs in it will be their files
and their own data.
Networking components

Server is a software or hardware device that accepts and responds to requests

made over a network.

A workstation is a high performance computer system designed for a single user

and has better graphics, more storage capacity and a more powerful central
processing unit.

Routers takes data from devices and takes it to the right place and uses ip
addresses to find the information. It also allows you to access the internet from
your computer and allows you to request files from a server.
Networking components
A network interface card is a hardware component that allows the computer to
connect to a network so without it the computer cannot be connected to the
network.

A wireless access point is a device that allows devices to connect to wired

networks wirelessly.

A hub sends data to every computer that is connected to the hub.

Switches connect multiple devices like computers, wireless access points, printers
and servers on the same network and allows devices to share information and talk
to each other.
Software resources
An operating system is installed on a computer's hard drive and allows the
hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software and without it
the computer and software is useless.

The windows office package includes programmes to complete tasks and includes
a word processing programme, spreadsheet software, presentation software, an
email programme and other software.

Antivirus is a software that prevents, detects and removes viruses from a

computer and runs automatically once installed to provide real time protection.

Music software is software that is used for musical compositions, digital recording,
and creating electronic music.
Software resources
A firewall is a network security device that monitors incoming and outgoing traffic
that decides whether to allow or block certain traffic based off security rules.

Email is a software that allows users to send and receive messages over a
computer network and does not need the user to be online when it has been sent
and allows the user to send to more than one person at a time.

Google chrome is a free internet browser and synchronizes google services,

accounts and allows to translate web pages. Google has its own applications like
gmail, google docs, google sheets, google slides, google forms and other
applications.
The roles of people using the network

User 2 will use the

network for
downloading music
and will use it for
the classes to teach
people how to use
mp3 devices.

User 3 will be the

network
User 1 will
administrator and
use the will have full
computer control over the
network for network. This
sales and computer will be
stock control. set up in the
manager's office
Computer network diagram
Test plan

I will need to test each computer to see if it works and logs on to the network. I will
also need to test the computers if it has an internet connection. I will also have to
check if the computers are all connected to the printer.i will also need to check if
the wireless access point works properly.
Alternative network diagram
costs of the hardware

I have suggested an all in one computer

as they want 3 so the computers will
come with everything they would need
which makes it cheaper for them.

HP
22in Celeron 4GB 128GB FHD All-in-One PC8
46/3670
Cost of hardware

I have recommended a multifunction

printer because as well as printing it
can also copy and scan documents so
they wouldn't need to buy separate
machines which makes it cheaper
than it would be.

Brother MFC-L3710CW Wireless Colour

Laser Printer933/8735
Cost of hardware
I have suggested them to
use a router because it
allows them to access the
internet and files from a
server

TP-Link Archer VR400 - V3 - Wirele

ss Router - DSL Modem - 4 Port Sw
itch
Cost of hardware

I have recommended a wireless

access point because they will be
connected to the shops wifi
wherever they are in the shop and
will also allow customers to
connect to the shops wifi
wirelessly.

NETGEAR WAC124 WiFi 5 Access Point (2033M

bps AC)
Cost of hardware

I have recommended a switch because it will

TP-Link TP-Link TL-SG108 8-Port Gigabit Et connect all the devices together on a network
hernet Switch and allow them to communicate with each other
and share information.
Justification

The hardware and software i have chosen to use meets the requirements that was
given also their needs. For example i have included a firewall in between the
internet and the router so it is more secure as the firewall will prevent unauthorised
access. I have also chosen to give them a multifunction printer and a wireless
access point even though they didn't put it in the requirements because with a
multifunction printer they will be able to print, copy and scan document in one
machine and a wireless access point will allow them to connect to the their
network using wireless devices.
