The composers of Pilipinas kong
Mahal is Francisco Santiago. Also
known as the “ Father of Kundiman
art song”, Francisco was born in
Santa Maria, Bulacan. Although he
didn’t come from a wealthy family,
Francisco continued on pursuing
his studies in piano and later on
became a piano instructor in 1916
when the University of the
Philippines Conservatory of music
Francisco Santiago was established.
The Filipino people pride
themselves on being patriotic to
their country. As such, Francisco
Santiago also wanted to show his
patriotism by creating “ Pilipinas
kong Mahal”. The song is often
heard during big celebrations and
events. You could also hear this
song every Monday during the “flag
ceremony” at elementary schools.

loyalty of the Filipino to its
country. Furthermore, we
can see how the lyrics
express the singer’s pledge

“Ako ay may Lobo”
The lyrics reflects to real life in regards to
handling your money and the needs and
wants of the person, as the lyrics say that is
indeed a waste of money buying a thig that
you want that is useless, further saying that
if you use the money for your needs, in this
case in the song, if the person bought food,
he/she would have not starved.

“Paru-parong Bukid”
The song Paru-parong Bukid is not a
song about butterflies. It is a song
which, in poetic fashion, describes the
Filipina woman dressed in her native
attire which we now call Filipiniana or
Traje de Mestiza.
“Paru-parong Bukid”
It originated during the Spanish time here in
the Philippines. It is said that the song acts as
a protest song for the Filipino women.
The meaning of the song is this: during that
time, some women are selling their own
bodies to Spanish colonizers with exchange
for money and food. The lyrics of the song
could be a proof. Understand it carefully.
