Miami 2017
PEAR HOSE CORPORATION
Aviation Hose Standards, Inspection and
Testing per

2016 Standard For Jet Fuel EI 1540 Design,

Quality Control At Airports Construction,
Commissioning,
Maintenance and Testing of
Aviation Fuelling Facilities
Tank Farm Loading
Hoses
- Loading hoses shall meet EI1529 Grade 2, Type C
latest edition as per both ATA103 & EI1540
- Hoses must be installed with 2 years of date of
manufacture and a maximum service life of 10 years.
- EI 1540 recommends that the hose shelf storage life to
be 2 years from date of manufacture and recommends
a maximum life between 10-15 years.
- Hoses with re-usable couplings must meet EI 1529 and
conform to EI 1540 testing requirements.
- Above does not apply to off loading hoses not under
pressure. (Hoses used for offloading under pressure we
feel above should apply)
Daily Fuel Facility
Hose Inspection
- ATA 103 indicates that hoses shall be inspected at
the beginning of each day including weekends and
holidays.
- Attachments to the hose ends should be inspected
for leaks/weeping at threads.
- Hose end fittings to be inspected for
slipped/damage.
- Hoses to be inspected for abrasions, cuts, soft
spots, cover separation, excessive cover wear,
blisters, exposed re-enforcement, cracking, kink’s
and bends that appear to be pending failure.
- Any hose showing defects that are of pending
failure should be replaced at once.
Fuel Facility
Semi- Annual
Hose Check
- Per ATA 103 hoses shall be pressure
checked on a semi-annual basis for
hoses fitted with re-usable couplings
and operated under pressure.
- Test shall be as outlined in IP 1540
requirements at 225 PSI.
- At anytime a new hose coupling or
hose attachment (nozzle/adapter) is
fitted to a hose, a 300 PSI pressure
test is required.
Aircraft Fueling Hose
- Aircraft hoses shall meet EI1529 Grade 2, Type C
latest edition as per both ATA103 & EI1540
- Hoses must be installed with 2 years of date of
manufacture and a maximum service life of 10 years.
- EI 1540 recommends that the hose shelf storage life
to be 2 years from date of manufacture and
recommends a maximum life between 10-15 years.
- Hoses with reusable couplings must meet EI 1529
and conform to EI 1540 testing requirements.
- Hoses with re-usable couplings shall be periodically
tested per requirements outlined in IP 1540 latest
edition.
Aircraft Fueling
Equipment Checks
for Hose
Daily
- Attachments to the hose ends should be
inspected for leaks/weeping at threads.
- Hose end fittings to be inspected for
slipped/damage.
- Hoses to be inspected for abrasions, cuts,
soft spots, cover separation, excessive
cover wear, blisters, exposed re-
enforcement, cracking, kink’s and bends that
appear to be pending failure.
- Any hose showing defects that are of
pending failure should be replaced at once.
Aircraft Fueling
Equipment Checks for
Hose
Monthly
- Layout hoses full-length and pressurize to full system
operating pressure.
- Attachments to the hose ends should be inspected for
leaks/weeping at threads.
- Hose end fittings to be inspected for slipped/damage and
cracks.
- Hoses to be inspected for abrasions, cuts, soft spots,
cover separation, excessive cover wear, blisters, exposed
re-enforcement, cracking, kink’s and bends that appear to
be pending failure.
- Any hose showing defects that are of pending failure
should be replaced at once.
- Particular attention should be paid to the first 18” from
each end fitting.
Aircraft Fueling
Equipment Checks
for Hose
Semi-Annual Checks
- Pressure fueling hoses fitted with reusable
coupling must undergo a pressure test at 225 PSI
every 6 months as outlined in EI 1540.
- At anytime a new hose coupling or hose
attachment (nozzle/adapter) is fitted to a hose, a
300 PSI pressure test is required.
Re-Usable
Couplings
- Recoupling and pressure testing hoses with
re-usable end fittings must only be carried
out by adequality trained person for proper
fit, assembly and testing.
- Only procedures approved by the OEM
shall be used.
- Per ATA 103, operators choosing to
reattached any hose coupling must undergo
training from the hose or coupling
manufacture or qualified distributor (EI
1540).
Re-Usable or Permanent
- Re-usable type fittings are generally defined as the 4 bolt type clamp style, where the bolts may be removed to remove or
install the coupling.
- Similar pin type clamp fittings can be considered permanent as the pin can not be removed in order to remove the fitting.
- Internally expanded Scovill type fittings are permanent and the most popular in North America.
Hose Testing of
Installed Hoses
- Prior to pressure testing installed hoses,
maximum pressure ratings must be
checked for installed valves, meters,
swivels that may be subject to the hose
test pressure to ensure no damage to the
equipment or personnel.
- It may be necessary to remove the hose
from the equipment for testing.
- Follow testing procedures as outlined in
EI 1540, Section 7.
- Particular attention should be paid to the
first 18” from each end fitting.
Commissioning
New Hoses
- Prior to putting a new hose into
service, the hose must be soaked and
flushed.
- Hoses shall be soaked with fuel for 8
hours.
- Fuel to be drained and checked for
colour and solid matter.
- Hoses shall be flushed by
recirculation with a minimum of 2,000
litres (500 US gallons).
- Longer soaking and flushing may be
required.
Common Hose Problems
Is Your Hose Assembly Qualified?
We believe that many hose assemblies in the market today may
not be qualified as outlined in EI 1529 Section 7 under Section
7.2 First Article.
First Article indicates that hose couplings must pass a 1,200 psi
pressure test. We assume this is to be as assembled on the
hose? (Is not clarified by the statement)
A 3’ hose assembled section is then subjected to 15,000 cycle
test of 300 psi, held for 60 seconds, reduce and relaxed for 30
seconds. At cycling 24 hours a day, this test would take over 15
days to complete.
This would certify the marriage of the specific hose brand and
specific coupling brand as a qualified assembly to EI 1529.
The test results must be available to customers upon request
showing the FAT parameters have been met.
We get many request for raw/bulk hose from sellers who we
know are assembling with other brand couplings that we feel
have not been subjected to the EI 1529 Sect. 7 FAT requirement.
