Organs
of Endocrine System

Hello! My name is…

MS. GERTRODEZ S. CADIZ
OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
1. Recognize the function of the endocrine system in an in-class quiz.
2. Identify with 85% accuracy the endocrine system glands & organs when
given a schematic drawing.
3. Correctly describe the function/s of all major endocrine system glands &
organs when given their names.

8
OVERVIEW: What Is the
Endocrine System?
 The endocrine system is made up of several
organs called glands that make hormones.
 These glands, located all over your body, create
and secrete (release) hormones.
 Hormones are the body's chemical messengers.
They carry information and instructions from one
set of cells to another.
 The endocrine system influences almost every cell,
organ, and function of our bodies.

9
FUNCTION: What Does the
Endocrine System Do?

Number 1: Number 2: Number 3:

hormones into the help control: how much of each hormone is

fluid and minerals.

10
Endocrine System vs Nervous System

Although both the endocrine system and the nervous system are both
regulatory, there are a few fundamental differences.

⬥ For one, the endocrine system uses chemical signaling (hormones, produced by
glands) while the nervous system uses electrical signaling (neural impulses).
⬥ The signal transmission of the nervous system is fast because neurons are
interconnected, but the functions are more short-lived.
⬥ Signal transmission in the endocrine system is slow, since hormones must travel
through the bloodstream, but the responses tend to last longer.

11
ANATOMY: What Are the Parts of the
Endocrine System?
While many parts of the body make
hormones, the major glands that make
up the endocrine system are the:

 hypothalamus  Pancreas
 pituitary  the ovaries
 thyroid  the testes
 parathyroids
 adrenals
 pineal body 12
MAJOR GLANDS
1. hypothalamus
2. pituitary
3. thyroid
4. parathyroids
5. adrenals
6. Pancreas
7. the ovaries &
the testes

13
1. Hypothalamus
 The hypothalamus is in the lower central part of
the brain.
 It links the endocrine system and nervous system.
 Nerve cells in the hypothalamus make chemicals
that control the release of hormones secreted from
the pituitary gland.
 The hypothalamus gathers information sensed by
the brain (such as the surrounding temperature, light
exposure, and feelings) and sends it to the pituitary.
 This information influences the hormones that the
pituitary makes and releases.

14
2. Pituitary Gland
 The pituitary gland is at the base of the brain, and
is no bigger than a pea. This gland has two lobes, the
posterior and anterior lobes.
 Despite its small size, the pituitary is often called the
"master gland." The hormones it makes
control many other endocrine glands.
 Example: The pituitary secretes hormones that
signal the reproductive organs to make sex
hormones. The pituitary gland also controls
ovulation and the menstrual cycle in women.

15
3. Thyroid
 The thyroid is in the front part of the lower neck. It's
shaped like a bow tie or butterfly.
 It makes the thyroid hormones thyroxine and

triiodothyronine.
 These hormones control the rate at which cells burn
fuels from food to make energy.
 The more thyroid hormone there is in the
bloodstream, the faster chemical reactions happen in
the body.
 These thyroid hormones help kids' and teens' bones
grow and develop. They also play a role in the
development of the brain and nervous system.

16
4. Parathyroids
 Attached to the thyroid are four tiny glands that work
together called the parathyroids.
 They release parathyroid hormone,
which controls the level of calcium in the blood with
the help of calcitonin which the thyroid makes.
 The pituitary gland makes many hormones, such as
thyrotropin which stimulates the thyroid gland
to make thyroid hormones.

17
5. Adrenal Glands
 These two triangular adrenal glands sit on top of each The Adrenal Glands Regulate Substance
kidney. The adrenal glands have two parts: Levels in the Blood and Release “Fight-or-
 The outer part is the adrenal cortex. It makes Flight” Hormones
hormones called corticosteroids that help
control salt and water balance in the body, the body's
response to stress, metabolism, the immune system,
and sexual development and function.
 The inner part is the adrenal medulla. It makes
catecholamines such as epinephrine.
Also called adrenaline, epinephrine increases blood
pressure and heart rate when the body is under stress.

18
6. Pancreas
 The pancreas makes insulin and glucagon which are
hormones that control the level of glucose, or sugar,
in the blood.
 When blood glucose increases, the pancreas releases

insulin, which stimulates the uptake of glucose

from the blood. This prevents blood glucose from
getting too high.
 When blood glucose concentration drops, the
pancreas releases glucagon, which stimulates
the breakdown of glycogen and releases glucose into
the blood. This raises blood glucose back to normal
levels.

19
The gonads are the main source of sex
7. Reproductive Glands: hormones. These sex hormones are
mainly involved in the development of
Ovaries & Testes our secondary sex characteristics.

 A girl's gonads, the ovaries, are in her pelvis. They make

eggs and secrete the female hormones estrogen and
progesterone.
 Estrogen is involved when a girl starts puberty. During
puberty, a girl will have breast growth, start to accumulate
body fat around the hips and thighs, and have a growth
spurt.
 Estrogen and progesterone are also involved in the
regulation of a girl's menstrual cycle. These hormones also
play a role in pregnancy.

The gonads are the main source of sex
7. Reproductive Glands: hormones. These sex hormones are
mainly involved in the development of
Ovaries & Testes our secondary sex characteristics.

 In guys the male gonads, or testes, are in the scrotum.

They secrete hormones called androgens, the most
important of which is testosterone.
 These hormones tell a guy's body when it's time to make
the changes associated with puberty, like penis and height
growth, deepening voice, and growth in facial and pubic
hair.
 Working with hormones from the pituitary gland,
testosterone also tells a guy's body when it's time to make
sperm in the testes.
