Types of
Compensation
Compensation is usually
time-based.
Salary - compensation given to professionals
on a monthly or semi-monthly basis
Wage - compensation given on a weekly or
daily basis and usually applies to manual
workers such as carpenters, plumbers,
electricians, and the like
Base pay or basic pay – fixed part of pay
Purposes of Performance
Evaluation
Administrative Purposes – a basis for
compensation decisions, promotions, transfers
and promotions.
Developmental Purposes – provide information
about employees’ performance and their strength
and weaknesses that may be used as basis for
identifying their training development needs
Performance Appraisal
1.
Methods
Trait methods – if employee possesses important work
characteristics
2. Graphic rating scales – characteristics to be evaluated is
represented by a scale
3. Forced-choice method - performance evaluation that requires the rater
to choose from two statements purposely designed to distinguish between
positive or negative performance
4. Behaviorally anchored rating scale (BARS) - includes five to ten
vertical scales, one for each important strategy for doing the job and
numbered according to its importance
5. Behaviour observation scale (BOS) - measures the frequency of
observed behaviour.
What is Employee Relations?
Employee relations organization’s efforts to create and
maintain positive relationship with its employees. It
should be applied to all phases of work activities in
organizations, and managers, to be effective, must be able
to encourage good employee relations among all human
resources under his or her care.

1. Drive for commitment
2. Harmonization of terms and conditions of
employment
3. Emphasis n mutuality
4. Policies and practices for communication
What is Employee Movements?

Employee movements are inevitable and are often


the result of evaluation or structural changes within
an organization.
1. Vertical movement – from lower to higher
2. Horizontal movements – transfer to another
department but similar responsibilities
Promotion – movement to a higher level or position
Criteria for promotion:
Tenure - number of years in the service of an
employee
Meritorious performance – excellent or
outstanding performance of an employee
Demotion – reverse of promotion, lowering of a rank,
reduction of salary, status, and responsibilities
a. Breach of discipline
b. Inadequacy of knowledge
c. Unable to cope with change
d. Organizational re-organization
Transfer - movement to another position but with the same
level or scope of responsibility
Separation - employee’s departure from the organization
Resignation – employee’s voluntary decision to leave the
organization
Separation with authorized cause - layoff, this is the
company’s decision to terminate employees due to
business reasons
Separation with just cause - employee is terminated due
to theft, fraud, and other serious offenses
Retirement - due to old age, illness, or infirmity
