What is Culture?

• Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular


group of people,encompassing language, religion, cuisine,
social habits, music and arts
Jamaican Culture
• Jamaican culture consists of the religion, norms, values and
lifestyle that define the peopleof Jamaica. Culture is mixed,
with an ethnically diverse society, stemming from a history of
inhabitants etc.
Jamaican Food
• Ackee and Saltfish- National dish

• Bammy- fried bread made from cassava flour and is served with fried fish.

• Duckanoo- recipe was brought from Africa, made using cornmeal,coconut,spices and
brown sugar-tied in a banana leaf (slowly cooked in boiling water).

• Fritters-deep fried breads usually contain codfish or conch.

• Grater cake-made from grated coconut and sugar,usually pink and white.
Jamaican Music
• The music of Jamaica includes Jamaicn folk music and many popular genres such as mento, ska,
rocksteady, reggae, dub music, dancehall, reggae fusion and related styles. Reggae is especially
popular through the international fame of Bob Marley.

Jamaican Traditional Dance
• Bruckins- is a dipping-gliding dance typified by the thrust and recovery action of the
hip and leg, performed to celebrate the anniversary of Emanicipation from Slavery
on the 1st of August 1838.
• Kumina- a religious group originated in Congo, West Africa brought to Jamaica by
free Africans. The three most important elements in kumina session are dancing,
singing and drumming.
• Maypole-known as Long Ribbon Pole in rural ares. It involves the plaiting of
different coloured ribbons demonstrating three basic traditional patterns starting with
grand chain or basket weave wrapping the ribbons around the pole from the top ,

• Quadrille- is a coupled (male and female) dance in Jamaica which was danced during
slavery. There are three styles- Ballroom style, the Camp Style and Contra Style
• Jonkunnu- is a band of masqueraders which usually perform in towns and villages
around Christmas time, accompanied by musicians who would play tunes of well
known traditional songs on the fife accompanied by bass and rattling drums, shakkas
and graters.

Jamaica’s National Heroes and Heroine
• Nanny of the Maroon- Queen Nanny was born
in what today Ghana of the Akans people. Her
portrait is featured on the $500 Jamaican bill.

• Sir Alexander Bustamante- He was born in


Hanover, also the first prime minister of
Jamaica. His portrait graces the Jamaican one
dollar bill.

• Marcus Moziah Garvey- was born on August
17,1887 in St.Ann’s Bay,Jamaica, he was a
Jamaican-born Black nationalist and leader of the
Pan Africanism movement. He can be found on the
$20 dollar coin.

• Samuel Sharpe- also known as Sam Sharpe


was born in St.James parish, he was an
enslaved Jamaican leader who wa the leder of
the Christmas Rebellion in Jamaica. His
portrait can be found on the fifty dollar bill.

• Paul Bogle- was born in St.Thomas, he was the


leader of the 1865 Morant Bya protesters,who
marched for justice and fair treatment for all
people in Jamaica

• Norman Washington Manley- he was born in
Roxborough Manchester, he was the cousin if
Alexander Bustamante. He was also a brilliant
scholar, lawyer and athlete. His protrait graces
he $5 dollar banknote from Jamaica.

• George William Gordon-was a
Jamaican businessman and politician.

• The Jamaican Flag- was unflured and hoisted
for the first time at the dramatic hour of
midnight on August 5,1962 as the British flag
was being lowered.

• The Coat of Arms- the motto is “Out of Many


One People” based on the population’s
multiracial roots.

• Ackee- The national fruit of Jamaica as well as
a component of the dish- ackee and codfish.

• the Doctor Bird or swallow tail humming bird


(Trochilus Polytmus)- The National Bird of
Jamaica,one of the most outstnding of the 320
species of hummingbirds.

Jamaica, it was found here by Christopher
Columbus.

• The Blue Mahoe is the National tree of


Jamaica. It is indigenous to the island nd grows
quite rapidly.
