Lesson 2:

Converting Decimal to
Fraction and Percent Forms
CONVERTING DECIMAL TO
FRACTION
4. TO CONVERT OR EXPRESS
DECIMAL TO FRACTION FORM, you
write the decimal value as a fraction
with a denominator of 1 and then
you need to multiply the resulting
fraction by 10^n
, where n is the number of digits
after the decimal point. Afterwards,
simplify the product.
Example 1: Covert 0.5 to fraction form.

Step 1: Write the decimal value as a

fraction with a denominator of 1. 0.5 1
Step 2: Multiply the resulting fraction
(numerator and denominator) by 10n, where
n is the number of digits after the decimal
point. n = 1 because in 0.5 there is only 1
digit after the decimal point.
0.5/1 x 10^1 = 5/10
Step 3: Simplify the product. In 5 10 , both
numerator and denominator are divisibly by 5.

5/10 ÷ 5/5 = 1/2

Therefore, 0.5 is equivalent to 1/2 .

Example 2: Convert 0.75 to fraction form.
Step 1: Write the decimal value as a fraction
with a denominator of 1.
0.75/1
Step 2: Multiply the resulting fraction
(numerator and denominator) by 10n, where
n is the number of digits after the decimal
point. n = 2 because in 0.75 there are 2 digits
after the decimal point.
0.75/1 x 10^2 = 75/100
Step 3: Simplify the product.
In 75/100 , both numerator and denominator
are divisibly by 25. 75/100 ÷ 25/25 = 3/4

Therefore, 0.75 is equivalent to 3/4 .

Example 3: Convert 0.125 to fraction form.

Step 1: Write the decimal value as a

fraction with a denominator of 1.
0.125/1
Step 2: Multiply the resulting fraction
(numerator and denominator) by 10^n,
where n is the number of digits after the
decimal point. n = 3 because on 0.125 there
are 3 digits after the decimal point.
0.125/1 x 10^3 = 125/1000
Step 3: Simplify the product.
In 125/100 , both numerator and denominator
are divisibly by 125.

125/1000 ÷ 125/125 = 1 8

Therefore, 0.125 is equivalent to 1/8 .

CONVERTING DECIMAL TO
PERCENTAGE
5. TO CONVERT OR EXPRESS DECIMAL TO
PERCENT FORM, you simply multiply the
decimal value by 100 and then you need
to indicate the percent sign (%) to the
product.
Example 1: Covert 0.5 to percent form.

Step 1: Multiply the decimal value by

100.
0.5 x 100 = 50
Step 2: Indicate the percent sign (%) to the
product.
50%

Therefore, 0.5 is equivalent to 50%.

Example 2: Covert 3.67 to percent form.
Step 1: Multiply the decimal value by 100.

3.67 x 100 = 367

Step 2: Indicate the percent sign (%) to
the product.
367%

Therefore, 3.67 is equivalent to 367%.

Example 2: Covert 0.002 to percent form.
Step 1: Multiply the decimal value by

100. 0.002 x 100 = 0.2

Step 2: Indicate the percent sign (%) to the
product.

0.2%

Therefore, 0.002 is equivalent to 0.2%.

Example 3: Covert 87.78 to percent form.
Step 1: Multiply the decimal value by 100.

87.78 x 100 = 8778

Step 2: Indicate the percent sign (%) to the
product.

8778%

Therefore, 87.78 is equivalent to 8778%.

Formative Test:
Complete the table below by converting or expressing the
fraction to decimal and percent forms.
DECIMAL FRACTION PERCENTAGE
1. 0.54
2. 0.016
3. 0.200
4. 1.28
5. 1.2727
