TOPIC: OYO EMPIRE

ORIGIN OF OYO EMPIRE


1. Oyo empire was founded between 1388-1938 by Oranmiyan who was a
descendant of Oduduwa (the founder of the Yoruba).
2. Oranmiyan was sent by Oduduwa to rule Benin but founded Benin people
troublesome, he decided to leave power for his son and then moved to Oyo
and established Oyo empire.
3. Oranmiyan chose Oyo as the capital because of the following reasons:
A. The location of the land which was savannah was suitable for movement.
B. It was placed where he could defend his new kingdom against attacks by the
Nupe and Borgu.
C. The area was along the trade route from South to the North.
THE RISE OF OYO EMPIRE
The following are factors that led to the rise of the empire:
1. The efficient army maintained by Oyo which was for expansion and for
keeping the empire calm.
2. The common language, religion etc. became the source of strength for Oyo
3. The highly organized political system of the empire.
4. The empire was doing well financially which also helped them.
5. The fertile savannah which was good for agriculture
6. It was a center for communication and trade route through the Niger to the
north and it was an important center of kolanut trade to the Sudanese states.
7. The introduction of horse too.
SOCIO-POLITICAL ORGANISATION OF THE EMPIRE
Political Organization:
1. The Alaafin: this is the administrative and political head of the empire.
2. Oyomesi: responsible for the installation of new Alaafin, checks the powers
of the Alaafin and also force the Alaafin to commit suicide if he becomes
tyrannical to the people by presenting an empty calabash to him or parrot eggs.
3. Bashorun: the head of the Oyomesi (the prime minister)
4. The Ilari: they see that the king’s obligations are carried out
5. Ogboni cult: checked the activities of both the Alaafin, the Oyomesi and the
people.

Military organization: the empire was made up of both infantry and cavalry; this
always made them to be successful in wars. The army was headed by Are ona
kankafo and whenever he gets defeated in a war, he is bound to commit suicide
rather than return home in shame.
Economic Organization: agriculture was the main source of their wealth, trade
too with Sudan, they also exported kolanuts and locally woven cloths to Sudan in
return for salt, dresses and horses. They equally generated revenue from taxes and
tributes.
Decline of Oyo empire: the empire collapsed due lots of factors but can be
summarized into fair share of wars, betrayal and death. (Read the factors from
your textbook, page174-176)
