Directions:
 For this activity, find your happy place. There will be two
groups, feel free to go with the group which suits you best.

There will be an equal number of pieces of paper cut to


specifically fit to a certain angle and dimension of a certain
picture. What you will be doing is to fit the puzzle at the fastest
time possible on the board. Once you have assigned the task,
said activity will be timed and the winner gets a reward.”

UNLOCKING OF DIFFICULTIES

1. Culture - refers to the customary beliefs, social forms, and material


traits of a racial, religious, or social group.

2. Values - It is the object of positive attitude.

3. Indigenous - It refers to originating or occurring naturally in a


particular place; native; something that is innate or inborn.
Indigenous People a group of people that have their own distinct
culture, language, history, and unique way of life.

4. Ideas - It is a formulated thought or opinion.


How do we define Social Ideas?
 It is the formulated thoughts, opinions, beliefs, and
practices that are accepted in society.

Filipinos’ Indigenous Social Ideas


1. Bahala Na - It is not “fatalism” but
“determination and risk-taking”. “Bahala na!”
means that Filipinos are leaving their fate to God
and telling themselves that they are ready to face
the difficult situation before them.
Example
 
Frontliners’ bravery during Enhanced
Community Quarantine describes this social
idea “bahala na” because they face difficulties
and risk their lives just to save the lives of
Filipinos.
2. HIYA- Americans translated it as “shame.” There are
different meanings of the word hiya depending on its form –
nakakahiya (embarrassing), napahiya (placed in an awkward
position), ikinahiya (be embarrassed with someone), It is a
“sense of propriety” or socially and morally acceptable
behavior.

Example
We make sure that we do what our parents have taught us
especially doing good deeds because we don’t want them to be
embarrassed by our actions and it is what is socially acceptable.
3. Utang na Loob
“Debt of gratitude” is a “principle of reciprocity
incurred when an individual helps another”. It is more
closely in the context of Filipino culture, it means
“gratitude/solidarity”.
Example
Filipinos are known for remembering “utang na loob” or
debt of gratitude. Saving our lives as in the cases of
COVID survivors, we will surely remember it for the
rest of our lives and will make sure that we will also
repay their goodness.
4. Pakikisama
It is a “smooth interpersonal relation” by going along
with the group on the majority decision.
Example
When we are new in a certain community we try to
build a good relationship or “pakikisama” with the
people in the said community.
5. Pakikipagkapwa
It started unfolding the concept of kapwa (shared
identity) which is at the core of Filipino social
psychology and which is the heart of the structure of
Filipino values.
Example
In time of calamities, Filipinos help one another.
The Batak Tribe of Palawan
- They are an indigenous group located in Barangays Maoyon, Tanabag,
Concepcion, and Langogan.
- They have a short stature, dark skin, and curly hair and are considered to be the
Negrito stock because of their physical attributes.
- The Practices of Batak are the following:
a. Inayap - a practice of Batak, the transferring of material from one area to
another and is not only limited to domesticated resources
b. Their religious faith is based on the spirits of nature (panya’en and diwata),
c. Their economic activities revolve mostly on swidden farming kaingin.
d. They practice same-sex task groups
Rituals Conducted
- Lambay (“honey ritual”) is the Batak honey festival marking
the onset of seasonal honey gathering, usually done in March.
- Sagkat is a ritual for kaingero performed by the babaylan
before field clearing.
- Sagda a ritual offering a small quantity of tobacco and
alcohol which are left in the forest.
- Tarek the trance-introducing dance.
Significance to National Development
- R.A. #8371, Chapter III, Section 4 and 7 states that
indigenous people have rights on their ancestral
lands/domains to possess, occupy, develop, control, and
use land and forest products which they have claims of
ownership.
