FILM ANALYSIS

NAME : ANANT SARASWAT

ROLL NO : 31
BRANCH : CSBS
PLOT
In 2003, Grant Taylor (Alex Kendrick) is the head football coach of the Shiloh Christian Academy Eagles, and has yet
to make the state playoffs or even post a winning record in his six-year tenure. After his seventh season begins with a
three-game losing streak, the players' fathers begin to agitate for his firing. This is not the only problem Grant is facing;
his home has a leaking roof, his appliances are breaking down, and his car is an unreliable embarrassment. Then,
crushingly, he learns that he is the reason that his wife Brooke cannot become pregnant.

Suffering intense emotional turmoil, Grant stays up all night praying and studying scripture. Finally he is inspired by
his old football coach to create a new coaching philosophy and decides to praise God regardless of on-field results. At
the same time he influences his players to give far greater effort and tells them that they can win under God's guidance.
The improved attitudes of his players influence the rest of the school. From that point on, the Eagles win all their
remaining regular season games and qualify for the state playoffs.

The Eagles lose their playoff opener, but are awarded the win by forfeit after their opponent used ineligible players.
The Eagles then advance all the way to the state championship game against the three-time defending champion
Richland Giants. The Giants race out to a 14-0 lead, but the Eagles manage to tie the game at the start of the second
half. The Giants tack on another touchdown and a field goal before the Eagles manage to score another touchdown,
As the clock winds down, the Giants come to within one yard of sealing the game with a touchdown. Defensive
lineman Brock Kelley is exhausted and begs for someone else to lead, but is encouraged by Grant to give him 4 more
downs. Brock agrees, and the Eagles manage to get a sack, a stop, and a pass block, taking it to 4th down. Richland
head coach Bobby Lee Duke, insisting on a touchdown to put the game away, calls for the Giants to go for it.
However, Brock causes a fumble, and the Eagles are able to take it to the 34-yard line with 2 seconds to go.

Grant, realizing again that they cannot outrun or overpower the Giants, decides to take a huge gamble, and asks for a
51-yard field goal from kicker David Childers, who was forced to take over when the starting kicker was knocked out
early in the second half. David insists that he can't kick that far, but goes out there anyway. After a rousing speech
from Grant, and seeing his father Larry Childers, who is a wheelchair user, stand beyond the fence and holding his
arms up, David begs for God to help him with the kick. Seemingly in response, the wind suddenly turns favorable, and
Grant tells them to kick it. David's kick just barely clears the uprights, allowing the Eagles to stun the Giants and win
the game.

After the game, Grant tells his players that they are not inferior or lacking in ability, and that nothing is impossible
with God. Later that night, Brooke reveals that she's finally pregnant, causing Grant to break down in tears of joy. Two
years later, it is revealed that they have a young son with another one on the way, and in the interim the Eagles have
won a second state title.

 this is a really inspiring movie. my expectations for it were on the floor before i watched
it, but i actually really liked it.
 Simple movie, gospel production, it would be more realistic if it were based on
real facts, like many others in the style, but it sends a beautiful message, almost
forced, emotional ending, as these cute movies about overcoming must be, I
was moved, I'm not a parameter, because I'm butter, but it worked...
 Well, this movie was a shock to see and to hear. Among the thousands of
mainline films I have watched over many years, this is the first I've seen with a
modern-day story that was unapologetically Christian. It actually used Jesus and
God's name as you would hear in a sermon in church. Of course, the fact that
"Hollywood" didn't make this film is understandable; it was produced, directed,
written, etc., by a Baptist church in Georgia.
LEADERSHIP LESSONS

Coach Grant Leadership Was Firm

It is not easy to be a leader especially when the team is always losing. Coach Grant realized
they have been losing recently not winning any match. The climax came in a game where
they lost 21 to 7. Then, he began to ask questions getting very firm on the players. How could
they have lost 21 to 7 Coach Grant asked. He shouted at the players. He was on top of his voice
letting them know that the players they lost to were not better in any way than them. He read
the analysis of the game to his team and revealed that they just gave the game away. He
discovered that the problem was that his team were not united. He spoke much on how only
unity can take them to the top. The ability of the leader to unite the people or the team he is
leading is a very vital ingredient to success. When the people are divided they will fail. Jesus
said a house divided against himself will not stand. Therefore, a very important for all leaders
here is the fact that, leadership must be firm in order to bring about unity.
Coach Grant’s Ability to See And Understand Problems (Confronting
Brutal Facts: Part I)
Coach Grant ability to identify the problem with his team was a good virtue. If you don’t know the problem is you
cannot proffer the right solution. and the only way to know what the problem is by asking the right questions. Coach
Grant wanted a change for his team. A change from the losing team to the winning team but something must happen
for that change to happen. It is that something that a good leader must be sensitive to. Even though Jim Collins said
that miracle moment always come as a surprise, there are things that good to great leaders must do for miracle to
happen. In Good to Great Jim Collins said, one of the finest ways to confront brutal facts is to lead with questions
which was exactly what Coach Grant did after the team lost 21 to 7 in a match. He asked questions like: can
someone tell him how they lost to that team 21 to 7? How could they have lost to that knowing his team also
practiced to win? Thereafter, Coach Grant read the analysis of the game before his team; nine dropped passes, four
fumbles, three interceptions etc. while the other team scored must of their points. Then he began to tell them how to
win and he said; they can’t win football games if they don’t play together as a team. he said, they can’t win football
games when they are more concern with they are doing afterwards. Hitting one of the players with his hat, he said
they can’t win football games when they miss practice and play anyhow. Sick and tired of the attitude of the team, he
said if they can win so why are they here playing football? These are brutal facts Coach Grant confronted with a
loud voice and a calm spirit. He saw the problems. He confronted them and made up his mind to chat a new course
for the entire team. Coach grant action here is a very good lesson for any leader that is riddled by challenges.
Coach Grant Ability to Recognize Talents and Bring them to bear through hard work (Leadership
Ingenuity in talent management)
First of all, it is important to say not every leader can recognize talents around them. Not every leader can recognize and harness those
talents into productivity. There leaders who can recognize talents but instead of harnessing these talents, they abuse them and waste them.
Coach Grant was an exceptional case in the Movie. There are two people in the team who didn’t know what they have got on the inside that
Coach.
David was scared about how far his kick can take the ball having Joshua Webster who was already kicking 45yards. David could barely
kick 35yards. So even when he was accepted to play in the team he had internal fears. He didn’t believe in himself enough to have a great
kick.
There is also Brock the big guy who has a lot of strength but didn’t know how to bring it to play on the field. Grant know Brook is the most
influential player in the team and he wanted him to influence the team positively. Knowing that he has leadership ability, he began the work
of transforming Brock into another leader. When God began to work on the team through Coach Grant, David discovered he could kick
even more than 45 yard. Brock discovered his inner strength. He carried Jeremy (a 160-pound team mate) on his back and push for a long
distance. The lesson is clear, every leader must learn to recognize and manage the talents around him.
Don’t Give Up Life and Don’t Give Up On Anyone
Coach Grant was a resilient coach. With he has been through. He stayed put. He was not shaken at all. He
maintained a positive mindset. His greatest hope was in God. His greatest faith was in God not in any man or
team member. He believed that will come through for him. He encouraged everyone in the team to be focus on
God. He told the boys to die to self and live for God even on the field. Well, the end of it all was that, coach
Grant won the state championship all to the glory of God. The lesson here is clear, in everything, let God be
praised. Only when we do that will we see success in all we put our hands to do.
