EARTHQUAKE IN
GUJARAT AND CASTE
DISCRIMINATION INTRODUCTION • The 2001 Gujarat earthquake, also known as the Bhuj earthquake, occurred on 26 January, India’s 52nd Republic Day, 08:46 AM IST and lasted for over 2 minutes. • The epicentre was about 9 km south-southwest of the village of Chob ari in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District of Gujarat, India. • The intraplate earthquake reached 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale and had a maximum felt intensity of X (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale. • The earthquake killed between 13805 and 20,023 people (including 18 in southeastern Pakistan), injured another 1167,000 and destroyed nearly 400,000 homes. • The earthquake caused a heavy toll of about 20,000 dead, more than 60,000 injured, 200,000 people homeless, and loss more than rupees. • The epicentre of this earthquake was located about 10 km northeast of the Bachau city, kutch district of Gujarat. • The focal depth was estimated to be 25 km. CAUSES OF EARTHQUAKE : • The Gujarat earthquake 2001 was causes by a fault that ruptured deep in the earth’s crust. • The causes of the earthquake is the collision between the indian plate and Eurasian plate. • Stree from the indian plate pushing north into the Eurasian plate is also a big cause for earthquake in Gujarat. • Gujarat is located at 300-400 km from the boundary of the indian Eurasian plates. • According to geologists, the earthquake occurred at the convergent boundary between the quake’s epicentre. • Even today, the continuous continental collision of the indian plate and the Eurasian plate governs the plate tectonics of the region. • This area faced a roughly west-east rifting trend during the break-up of gondwana in the Jurassic. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE:
• The bhuj earthquake destroyed 300,000 homes; on top of that, over
700,000 homes were partially destroyed. • According to the Indian National Trust For Art And Cultural Heritage (INTACH), about 40% of the heritages were collapsed or severely damaged. • The bridges and railways of the affected area were also destructed due to the earthquake. • Fibre optics providing communications to the area become unfunctional. • The Gujarat earthquake took thousands of lives and left thousands of people homeless. OBJECTIVE: IMPACT • The death toll in the kutch region was 12,300. • Initially, many people thought the death toll would rise to over 100,000, but that has since been regarded as an overestimate. • Which was situated only 20 km away from the epicentre, was devasted. • Considerable damage also occurred in Bhachau and Anjar, Bhau and Bhachau. • Over one million structures were damaged or des CASTE DISCRIMINATION INTRODUCTION • India is considered to be one of the few countries in the world where various parts of the local population practice different religions ranging from Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity being the main four sectors of religion. • This is the case roughly '79.8% of the population' practices Hinduism which accounts for nearly '1 billion of the population' as practitioners of the religious. • The hinduism is considered to be one of the oldest religions in the world, dating back around 4000 years, many sub systems have formulated, one of them being the Caste system . • Issues like untouchability and casteism are still common in rural areas. • The reason for this is the deep rooted traditions of casteism. Not just adults, even children are subjected to this form of discrimination OBJECTIVE OF CASTE DISCRIMINATION
• The main three objective of caste discrimination are:
1. Education and Work. 2.Marriage. 3. Intersectionality CONSEQUENCES OF CASTE DISCRIMINATION INEQUALITIES CAUSED BY CASTE DISCRIMINATUON Violates fundamental right. Creates disharmony and leads to conflicts. Responsible for groupism. Minority caste division. Social status is low due to narrow minded people.
