WHAT IS A BIO-BATTERY?
A “Bio-Battery” is an energy storage device that is
powered by organic compounds usually being
glucose.
By using enzymes to break down glucose, bio-
batteries directly receive energy from glucose.
PRINCIPLE OF BIO-BATTERY
A Bio-Battery consists of an anode, cathode,
separator and electrolyte with each component
layered on top of another.
Anode is located at the top and cathode at the
bottom of the battery.
Between the anode and the cathode lies the
electrolyte which contains a separator.
This system as a whole allows for flow of protons
and electrons which ultimately generates
electricity.
WORKING OF BIO-BATTERY
o Anodes allow current to flow in from outside the
battery, cathodes allow current to flow out from
the battery.
o In Anode sugar is broken down producing
electrons and protons.
o These Electrons travel through the electrolyte and
go to the cathode.
o Protons are redirected to go through separator to
the cathode side of the battery.
o At the cathode oxidation reduction reaction takes
place with the help of electrons and protons.
NEED OF BIO-BATTERY
Bio-Battery is one of the energy conservation
method.
It can save lot of power and is also energy
efficient phenomena.
Bio-Battery is a renewable energy source which
can be profitably used.
ADVANTAGES
Bio-Batteries have their ability to allow an instant
recharge.
Through a constant supply of glucose Bio-Batteries
are able to continuously keep themselves charged
with an external power supply.
They are source of non flammable, and non toxic
fuel. This provides a clean alternative renewable
power source.
It is Eco-Friendly.
DISADVANTAGES
Compared to non conventional batteries like
lithium batteries, bio-batteries are less likely to
retain most of their energy.
This causes a problem when it comes to long term
usage and storage of energy for these batteries.
However researchers are continuing to develop
the battery in order to make it a more practical
replacement for current batteries and sources of
energy.
APPLICATIONS
Portable charging in cell phones.
Disaster relief.
Bio-Battery music playback with memory.
Medical implants like pacemakers, Insulin pumps.
Replacing batteries in toys and greeting cards.
Sony successfully demonstrated bio-battery
powered music playback with a memory type
Walkman and passive speakers by connecting four
bio-batteries in series.
FUTURE SCOPE
Bio-Batteries serve as a new form of energy that
is proving to be eco-friendly as well as successful
in producing and reserving energy.
The batteries are still being tested before being
commercially sold and many researchers are
working to advance the development of these
batteries.
CONCLUSION
Discovery of bio-battery led to a new era of
energy generation.
This is Eco-Friendly and used as alternative
source.
They are high performing, stable, flexible and
long-lasting.
