First Paper
• A well written thesis under well supervising from
your thesis advisor is fundamental of your paper.
• You need not to finish all of your thesis to start
writing your first paper.
• The first paper published from part(s) of your thesis
are the good starter.
• First paper published in a reputed journal is a major
step, giving the confidence to the graduate student.
Properties of Good Paper
• It must be originality in the paper. This is the fundamental
criterion
• The objective should be clearly defined and the
completed studies should be reported in complete context.
• A technical paper normally makes 2 or 3 important
points.
• Should be clear, concise, logical, precise, accurate and
readable.
• Throw away superfluous material and areas of ambiguity.
Should be ruthless in choosing only relevant material from a
vast body of data.
• Paper as a detective story.
• Paper is not a piece of literature but a readable prose.
• Follow the guideline of the journal
Creating Paper’s Title
• The title is the main advertisement for your article.
• A great title attracts the audience to read on your paper.
• A paper of poor title may never reach its target readers.
• Your paper title should reflect its content clearly, enabling
readers to decide weather it’s relevant for them.
• Make the title catchy and keep it specific.
• Leave out phrased such as “a study of”, “investigations
into”, “observations on”.
• It should be accurate, unambiguous, specific and
complete(if possible).
• It should be as short as possible.
• The effective title should be enticing and interesting.
They will make people want to read further more.
Abstract
• The abstract is your chance to describe your research in
200 words or so. Then use it wisely.
• Title, abstract and keywords should be able to fully
represent your paper.
• Many authors write the abstract last, so it reflects the
content accurately.
• The abstract should summarize the problem or objective
of your research, its method, results, and conclusions.
• It should mention each significant section of the paper,
with enough detail for readers to decide whether or not
to read the whole paper.
• It should be accurate. Don’t promise more than your
paper delivers.
Introduction

• Introduce the topic.

• Brief description of related studies.
• State the reasons for conducting this research
(problem statement).
• State clearly the problem that has been studied and
how it is related to previous studies.
• Describe briefly the method of study and the scope of
your work.
• You should be able to capture the non-experts among
the readers with the Introduction.
Methods
Also called “Experimental Methods”, “Methodology”, “Materials and Methods”.

• Should be detailed enough that readers can replicate your research

and assess whether the methods justify the results and conclusions.
• Normally use the past tense. It’s about what you did.
• Should explain how you studied the problem, identify the procedures
you followed.
• If the methods are new, explain them in detail.
• If they have been published before, cite the original work, including
your modifications made.
• If the methods are standards, just refer to the standard (Code no.
required).
• Diagram or flow charts can be used if it is more effective illustrated.
• Identify the equipment and materials used, specifying their source.
• State the frequency of observation, the data recorded.
• Accuracy of data, statistical analysis or tests used.
Results
The hardest part to write in the paper, you must clear of
what points you want to convey the reader.
• Present your findings objectively, explaining them mainly
in text.
• Show how your results contribute to the body of technical
knowledge.
• Be clear and logical presentation.
• Interpretation of results
• Establish your new ideas
• Concentrate on key facts and figures
• Ensure to include all important facts
• Refer to all figures and tables
Discussion
This is where you describe the meaning of your results. It
should explain how your results can extend the body of
knowledge.

• Assess the validity of the results

• Make comparisons with other investigations and with
theory.
• How your results relate(conform) to your expectation or
your literature reviews.
• Do the results support or contradict with existing theory.
Your finding can reflect the modification of theory in what
extend?
• Analyze discrepancies of the results obtained.
• Critically review what has been achieved.
Conclusions

• Your conclusions should conform to the purposes of the

research.
• Should be based on your research results.
• Do not write as conclusion if it has not been discussed in
the results.
• No speculation is allowed.
• Point or itemized form is preferable.
• Conclusions should be in present tense.
• Suggest the practical application of your results.
• Further study or next step research can also be suggested.
