British Maritime Treaties
in the Gulf
Overview
The British were the ruling force in the Gulf region from 1820 to 1971. Britain’s
initial interest in Gulf began in the seventeenth century as a result of trade and
economic factors.

The Qawasim tribal union controlled the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf's entry point, in
the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The Qawasim had a large fleet of
commercial and military ships located in Ras al Khaimah and Sharjah, respectively.
Every journey past the Strait of Hormuz gave the Qawasim large amounts of
money.

However, the British refused to pay these tolls, and high tensions between the
Qawasim and the British arose. In 1820, British soldiers attacked Ras Al Khaimah
and destroyed the entire Qawasim fleet.
