Disillusionment
◦ Fascism, communism and liberalism were the three stories formulated in 20 th century
by the global elites to predict the future of the entire world.
◦ We need to protect human rights, to grant everybody the vote, to establish free
markets, and to let individuals, ideas and goods move throughout the world as easily
as possible.
◦ The sense of disorientation has been heightened with the accelerating pace of
technological disruption.
◦ Technology, AI, is replacing currency and a country’s finance.
◦ W know how to kill the mosquitoes; but if a thought buzzed in our mind and kept us
awake at night, most of us didn’t know how to kill the thought..
◦ Humans were always far better at inventing tools than using them wisely.
◦ Infotech and biotech will manipulate our inner world.
◦ In 2018 the common person feels increasingly irrelevant.
◦ The liberal story was the story of ordinary people.
◦ It is much harder to struggle against irrelevance than against exploitation.
The Liberal Phoenix
◦ The first era of globalization and liberalization ended in the bloodbath of the first World War.
◦ During Hitler moment, in the 1930s, fascism seemed irresistible.
◦ During the Che Guevara moment, between the 1950s and the 1970s, it again lost its hold. However, in
the end, communism collapsed.
◦ Liberalism included the values of empathy and equality from communism.
◦ Trump’s message is that it’s not America’s job to formulate and promote any global vision.
◦ Russia is forceful rival of global liberal order.
◦ Media prevents citizens from realizing the truth.
