Waste Disposal
By Taukheer & Rudresh
What is Waste Management?

Waste management is the processes of

managing waste from its source to its final
disposal. And in this, a few activities are
involved.
Ghazipur
Ghazipur
Landfill
Located in the way to Ghazipur
from central Delhi.
Established in the year 1984.

700 trucks dump 3,000 metric

tons (3 lakh KG) of garbage everyday
from 4.5 million people living in East
Delhi.
A steady steam of smoke will be
visible as decomposing waste
generates the highly combustible
methane gas.
The Two Young Vulnerable
10 year old Jeevan & 12 year old Devender were the two
rag pickers. They were picking, sorting and selling
waste in the Ghazipur landfill for years. And they had
no protection of gloves or masks while facing the
mound of discarded waste. Therefore, they are more
vulnerable to infections and illnesses like most of other
rag pickers.
“Often we cut ourselves on bits of discarded glass or
metal,” said Jeevan. But they didn’t seem to show any
hatred kind of feeling towards the waste which helps
them to earn their living.
The Violation Of Rules
The Municipal Solid Waste rules
state that, landfills should be ‘away
from habitation clusters’.

But the rule was violated at the

Ghazipur landfill, where the
markers, houses and places of
worship are located.
The Flawed System
The activists feel that, we follow an
imperfect system of waste disposal and
management because, these dump sites
catch fire easily and are difficult to
extinguish.
Instead of making huge mounds of waste,
they suggest to compress it and put it
under the soil cover which could erase the
fear of pollution as well.
The Suggestions
“We need to learn from Sweden, which is a zero waste country. We need to learn from
countries like Sri Lanka, which is segregating its waste, or Bhutan where everyone is
conscious to not pollute their land,” said Swati Sambyal, Centre for Science and Environment.

As there is a need to organise awareness programmes for citizens to encourage segregation

and recycling, most activists push for segregation at source and feel a strict set of laws and
fear of penalty is needed to make people comply.
Swachh Bharat Mission

now got a 35,000-litre water tank.
