Introduction
INTRODUCTION
Clear communication and obvious empathy
will go a long way towards making every
procedure successful and make the patient feel
that they aren’t just another product on an
assembly line. Unfamiliarity with laboratory
procedures when combined with obvious
apprehension can make communication from the
patient to the medical technologist difficult.
It is the med tech’s job to recognize this
apprehension, to take it into account when
explaining the procedure and to ensure that the
patient understands all of the ramifications of
what is happening.
INTRODUCTION
Prior to each collection, review the
appropriate test description, including
the specimen type indicated, the
volume, the procedure, the collection
materials, patient preparation, and
storage and handling instructions.
INTRODUCTION

Provide the patient, in advance, with

appropriate collection instructions and
information on fasting, diet, and medication
restrictions when indicated for the specific
test.
OBJECTIVE
02
S
At the end of this activity, the
students must be able to:
a) Identify patient state before conducting laboratory test/s.

b) Memorize all the essential precautionary measures, and

standard protocols of patient preparation before administering a
laboratory test.

c) Apply accurately patient preparation procedures to each

specific laboratory test.

PROCEDURES
PROCEDURES:
1. Review the requisition forms to ensure that all necessary
information is recorded. Enter the required information
from the requisition form into the lab logbook.
2. Give clear instructions to the patient or when the patient
is to collect the specimen themselves (urine). Listed
below are examples of General rules of preparation for
laboratory tests:
PROCEDURES:
a) As much as possible, it is recommended to take a blood test
in the morning from 08:00 to 10:00, in the fasted state (not
less than 8 hours and no more than 14 hours of bowel rest,
drinking – water in usual regime) and avoid overeating the
day before blood tests.
b) If you take some medicines, you should consult your doctor
as to the reasonability of tests during the period of
medicine taking or as to the possibility to cancel medicines
before tests; duration of cancellation shall be determined
by the period of medicine excretion from blood.
PROCEDURES:
c) Alcohol shall be excluded the day before laboratory tests.
d) Smoking shall be avoided at least during 1 hour before
laboratory tests.
e) Exclude physical and emotional stresses the day before
laboratory tests.
f) It is recommended to take a rest (take a seat) for 10-20
minutes after arrival to the hospital and before blood tests.
PROCEDURES:
g) It is not recommended to conduct blood tests immediately
after physiotherapeutic procedures, instrumental
examinations and other medical procedures. It is
recommended to postpone laboratory analysis for some
days after several medical procedures (for example, biopsy
of prostate gland before PSA test).
h) For the control of laboratory parameter over time, it is
recommended to make repeated tests under the similar
conditions: in the same laboratory, take blood test at the
same time of the day, etc.
PROCEDURES:
i) It is not recommended to eat vegetables and fruits which
may change the colour of urine (beet, carrot, etc.) or take
diuretics the day before analysis.
j) Urine is collected during a day. The first morning portion
of urine shall be removed. All next portions of urine
extracted during the day, night and morning portion of the
next day shall be collected in one container which shall be
kept in refrigerator (+4…+8°C) during the entire period of
collection (this is a required condition because the content
of analyte is significantly reduced at the room
PROCEDURES:
k) For gastropanel: Examination shall be done in the fasted
state (in the morning after 8-12 hours of night bowel rest).
l) It is required to refrain from smoking during 4 hours
before examination.
m) It is permitted to conduct the examination at the same time
with taking usual patient’s medicines prescribed by doctor,
except for medicines which may affect the secretion of
gastric juice.
