CHILDHOOD PSYCHIATRIC

DISORDERS
 Childhood psychiatric disorders – defined as delays or
disruptions in developing age- appropriate thinking,
behaviors, social skills or regulations of emotions.
Pervasive developmental disorders

 PDD – refers to a group of disorders characterized by


delays in the development of socialization and
communication skills.
 CLASSIFICATION OF PDD:-
 Autistic disorder
 Rett’s disorder
 Childhood disintegrative disorder
 Asperger’s disorder
 Autistic Disorder – is a developmental disorder affecting the
areas of the brain that affect communication and social skills.
 Early signs of Autism –
 Little or no eye contact
 Social withdrawal
 Difficulty in learning language
 Inappropriate laughing
 CAUSES :-
 Neurological implications – abnormalities in brain structure
 Early developmental problems
 Genetic - Parents
 CLINICAL MANIFESTATION :
 Poor speech
 Inappropriate laughing or crying
 Inappropriate playing with toys
 Difficulty dealing with changes in routine
 TREATMENT :-
 Early interventions and special education programs
 Family Counseling
ASPERGER’S SYNDROME

 Asperger Syndrome – is a neurological developmental disorder


which affects a person’s behavior, use of language and
communication and social interaction.
 A person suffering from this syndrome tends to have an obsessive
focus on one topic and is likely to perform the same behavior
repeatedly.
 CAUSES :-
 The exact cause is not known.
 Environmental factors – such as problems in pregnancy and
birth, prenatal infections – these factors may increase the severity
of the underlying defect in genes.
 CLINICAL FEATURES –
 No response - Even loud sounds
 Echo words
 No interactions with others
 No fear
 TREATMENT
 Social skills training
 Speech language therapy
 CBT
 Parent education and training
 MEDICATIONS – Antipsychotic drugs
RETT’S DISORDER
 Rett’s disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder occurring almost exclusively
in females that affects development after an initial 6 month period of normal
development.
 CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS:-
 Loss of purposeful movements of the hand such as touching, grasping.
 Loss of speech
 Stereotyped hand movements
 Breathing problems
 Behavioral problems
 TREATMENT
 Medications - carbamazepine
CHILDHOOD DISINTEGRATIVE DISORDER
 It is a condition in which children develop normally through age 3 or 4 .
 A disorder characterized by loss of achieved developmental skills that occurs
after the age of three years old.
 SYMPTOMS :-
• Loss of the ability to speak
• Loss of social skills
• Inability to interact with others
• Irritability
• Loss of ability to understand the language
• TREATMENT :-Medication, Behaviour therapy, Environmental therapy
ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDERS

 It is also called hyperkinetic disorder.


 Neurological disorder.
 Itis marked by developmentally inappropriate
inattention
 EPIDEMIOLOGY :-
 A prevalence of 1.7% was found among primary school children.
 ADHD – is four time more common in boys than in girls.
 ETIOLOGY :-
 Biological Factors
 Environmental factors
 Psychosocial factors
 CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS – inattention, Hyperactivity, impulsiveness
 TREATMENT :-
 Pharmacotherapy – Clonidine, Pemoline
 Non – Pharmacotherapy – Behavior modification techniques, CBT, Social
skills training, Family education.
