SPLEEN QI DEFICIENCY
CLINICAL MENIFESTATIONS

Poor appetite, slight abdominal distension after

eating, tiredness, lassitude, a desire to lie down,
pale complexion, weakness of the limbs, loose
stools, a tendency to obesity
Tongue: Pale.
Pulse: Empty.
Key symptoms: poor appetite, tiredness, loose
stools.
LOOSE STOOLS PALE TONGUE
PALE COMPLEXION POOR APPETITE
EPIGASTRIC FULLNESS TIREDNESS
Tiredness and
loose stools are
adequate to
diagnose Spleen-
Qi deficiency.
AETIOLOGY OF SPLEEN QI DEFICIENCY - DIET

Excessive consumption of cold and raw foods hinder the spleen's

function of transformation and transportation of blood.

The Spleen prefers warm foods.

Eating
at irregular times or excessive eating can also strain the
Spleen's capacity.

Eating
too little or eating a protein-deficient diet. can also cause
Spleen Qi deficiency.
AETIOLOGY OF SPLEEN QI DEFICIENCY - CLIMATE

Prolonged exposure to dampness (either from

weather or from the place of living) can weaken
the Spleen.

Dampness is a climatic factor that affects the

Spleen very frequently.
AETIOLOGY OF SPLEEN QI DEFICIENCY -
CHRONIC DISEASES

Any protracted disease will tend to weaken

the Spleen and lead to Spleen-Qi deficiency.

Dampness and Phlegm are a frequent

consequence of protracted diseases.
PATHOLOGY

This is by far the most common Spleen

disharmony and probably the most common
pattern in general, no doubt because of our
irregular dietary habits and excessive use of
the mind in studying, working, etc.
The pattern of Spleen-Qi deficiency is also central
to all Spleen disharmonies, as all its other
deficiency patterns are but a variation of it. For
example, the pattern of Spleen-Yang deficiency is
nothing but a further stage of Spleen-Qi
deficiency; the pattern of Spleen-Qi sinking is a
type of Spleen-Qi deficiency characterized by
sinking of Qi; the pattern of Spleen not holding
Blood is simply the same as Spleen-Qi deficiency .
When deficient Spleen-Qi fails to hold
Blood in the vessels; the pattern of
Spleen-Blood deficiency describes the
clinical manifestations occurring when
deficient Spleen-Qi and its Food-Qi(Gu Qi)
are defective in making blood.
CLINICAL NOTE

Spleen-Yang deficiency, Spleen-Qi

sinking, Spleen not holding Blood
and Spleen-Blood deficiency are
all variations of Spleen-Qi
deficiency.
The impairment of the Spleen's
transformation and transportation
function causes the various digestive
symptoms, such as abdominal distension,
loose stools and lack of appetite. As the
Spleen is responsible for transporting
Food-Qi to the four limbs, when Spleen-Qi
is deficient the limbs will be deprived of
nourishment and feel weak.
The Spleen also transports
Food-Qi throughout the body,
hence the tiredness and
lassitude experienced when
Spleen-Qi is deficient, typically
the patient desires to lie down.
IfSpleen-Qi is deficient over a
long period of time, the inability of
Spleen-Qi in transforming fluids
can give rise to Dampness and
Phlegm, which may cause obesity
CLINICAL NOTE

Spleen-Qi deficiency is one of the

most common patterns in practice.
It is the most common cause of
cronic tiredness.
Pathological precursors of pattern

There are not many patterns that are a precursor of

this pattern, as Spleen-Qi deficiency itself is a 'firstline'
pattern, that is, one that arises first and that
itself is the precursor to other patterns. However,
Lung-Qi deficiency may be the precursor of Spleen-Qi
deficiency.
A Spleen-Qi deficiency may also
affect the Heart leading to
Heart-Qi (and often Heart-Blood)
deficiency and the Lungs leading
to Lung-Qi deficiency. A chronic
Spleen-Qi deficiency may also
lead to Kidney-Yang deficiency
especially if there is Dampness.

potential consequences of
Spleen-Qi deficiency
