Neglect A Definition
The chronic failure of a parent or caretaker to provide a child 18 yo with basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, medical care, educational opportunity, protection, and supervision.
Failure-toFailure-to-Thrive A Definition
FTT is a condition in which children show a marked retardation or cessation of growth. FTT can result from: a medical condition; environmental factors; or combination of these.

Incest A Definition
The occurrence of sexual relations between close blood relatives. Broader interpretation: sexual intercourse between participants who are related to each other by formal or informal kinship bond that is culturally regarded as a bar to sexual relations; ie- between stepparents & stepchildren, among stepsiblings.

Statutory Rape
Intercourse is unlawful between a man > 16 yo and a woman under the age of consent (14 21 yo,
depending on jurisdiction).
Legal charges typically pursued by parents of consenting girl, rather than the girl herself.

Separated Parents
When marital discord is severe, children are often caught in the line of fire. Fabrication vs. Denial Chronic severe parental conflict can be as destructive for a child as physical and sexual abuse.

The Secret Epidemic. Intimate Partner Violence: 85% = women, 15% = men. Adult battering and other maltreatment. Harmful, w/ medical & psychiatric consequences.

Pregnant women at increased risk. Clinicians: plausible MOI? educate all patients (incl.batterers); documentation [caution: Dx]; referrals; help available for victims & batterers.
