INTRODUCTION 2/13
 The lungs are a pair of respiratory organs situated in the thoracic cavity.
 Each lung invaginates the corresponding pleural cavity.

 Features:- Each lung is conical in shape.

 Apex- Upper end


 Base- Resting on diaphragm
 Borders- Three- 1. Anterior
2. Posterior
3. Inferior
 Surface- Two- 1. Costal
2. Medial- (a). Vertebral part
(b). Mediastinal part

 Cervical pleura- Related to clavicle

 Anterior margin (costomediastinal line of the pleural


Reflection) – Related to
(1) Sterno clavicular joint
(2) Sternal angle
(3) Xiphsternal joint.

 Inferior margin (costodiaphragmatic line of pleural


Reflection - Related to
(1) 8th rib
(2) 10th rib
(3) 12th rib
(4) 12th thoracic vertebra and spine.

 Posterior margin- Related to

(1) 12th thoracic spine


(2) 7th cervical spine.

 Anterior border of right lung- related to


(1) Sternoclavicular joint
(2) Sternal angle
(3) Xiphsternal joint.

 The lower border of left lung – Related to


(1) Cardiac notch
(2) 6th costal cartilage.

 The lower border of each lung – Related to


(1) 6th rib

(4) 10th thoracic spine.
