Humour
Parts of the eye Functions of the eye
Cornea Transparent layer which refracts and focused light onto the retina

Iris The coloured part of the eye which controls the size of the pupil

Pupil Opening in the center of the iris which controls the quantity of light entering the eye

Aqueous humour Transparent fluid which maintains the shape of the eyeball and focuses light into the eye

Conjunctiva Transparent membrane which protects the front of the sclera

Vitreous humour Transparent jelly-like substance which maintains the shape of the eyeball and focuses light onto
the retina
Blind spot Part of the retina which is not sensitive to light as there no photoreceptors and an exit point for
all optic nerve fibres
Optic nerves Neve fibres which carry nerve impulses from the retina to the brain to be interpreted

Yellow spot Part of the retina which is most sensitive to light as it has many photoreceptors

Retina Layer containing photoreceptors which detects light and produces nerve impulses

Choroid Black layer that prevents reflection of light in the eye and supplies oxygen and nutrients to the eye

Sclera Strong layer that maintains the shape of the eye and protects it

Eye lens Transparent and elastic convex lens which focuses light onto the retina

Ciliary muscle Muscle that changes the thickness of the eye lens through contractions and relaxations

Suspensory ligaments Strong fibres which hold the eye lens in its position
Photoreceptors

 Two types of photorecptors

 Rod cells – sensitive to different light
intensities including faint light but not
sensitive to colour lights
 Cone cells – sensitive to colour lights
under bright conditions.
 3 types off cone cells – red light , green
light and blue light
Mechanism of sight

Light rays from an object

enters the eye through the
cornea , aqeuos humuor , eye The light ray stimulates
lens and vitreous humuor The brain interprets the nerve
photoreceptors to produce impulse . The small inverted
before reaching the retina . nerve impulse that are sent to
The parts of the eye focus image on the retina will thrn
the brain . appear upright
light rays from the object onto
the retina . The object
appears smaller and inverted
Questions

-Give two types of photoreceptors and explain .

-What is the most outer part of the eye?
- What is the difference between the blind spot and yellow spot ?
- How many parts are there in the human eye ?
- Explain the mechanism of the eye .
