EARLY GRADE MATHEMATICS ASSESSMENT (EGMA)

• A standardized assessment tool.

• An orally administered assessment of the core
mathematics competencies taught in primary
grades.
• It is administered 20 minute per pupil.
• EGMA items were drawn from extensive research
and were constructed by panel of experts on
mathematics cognition.
• The questions are arranged from simple to
complex. Task are pre-requisite.
• The purpose of EGMA is not to total the scores, it
is analysis by sub-task.
It is composed of 10 Tasks, 60 seconds limit.
Task 1- Oral Counting
Any language used by the child is OKAY.
Task 2- Rational Counting
- (one to one corresponding) using circles
Task 3- Number Identification
- consist of 20 items that increase in difficulty
Task 4- Number Discrimination
- determining which is greater number
Task 5- Missing Number
- 10 item test
Task 6A- Addition Level 1
- consist of 20 items that increase in difficulty
Task 6B- Addition Level 2
- consist of 5 items with increasing difficulty
Task 7A- Subtraction Level 1
- consist of 20 subtraction facts (one digit difference)
Task 7B- Subtraction Level 2
- consist of 5 subtraction facts (two digit difference)
Task 8- Word Problems
- consist of 6 one step addition and subtraction word problems
Task 9- Geometric Pattern Completion
- consist of 5 items
Task 10- Geometric Visualization
- consist of 7 items
HOW TO ADMINISTER?
1. Formost establish a playful and relaxed support with the
children to be assessed via some simple initial
conversation of interest to the child.
2. Determine what language the child used in counting
before you start.
3. Never interrupt the child as soon as he started counting,
if he skips, just go on, anyway it is timed (60 min.).
4. If the child commit 4 successive errors, stop, continue to
the next task.
5. If a child stops on a number for 5 seconds, proceed to
the next number. Cover the succeeding rows with a
bondpaper.
6. For word problems, read the question twice. If the child
can answer during the first ranking, just let him answer. If
the child can answer, pat him and let him continue. Avoid
saying “Very Good! Excellent, bright ka!” Just say Thank
you, padayon ta.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

• It is important to establish a playful and relaxed rapport with the

children to be assessed, via some simple initial conversation about
topics of interest to the child. The child should perceive the following
assessment almost as a game to be enjoyed rather than a severe
situation.
