grammar are made with
the Adjective and Adverb
words to show how big or
small, high or low, more or
less, many or few, etc.
Degrees of Comparison
There are 3 kinds of Degrees of
Comparison

1. Positive degree
2. Comparative degree
3. Superlative degree

Is used to compare two persons or


two things that are equal.
THE PATTERN

S+VERB+AS+ADVERB+AS+O

Examples:
  This house is as big as that one. 
Rick runs as fast as his brother
Rick speaks English as fluently as His
brother
Comparative Degree

Is used to compare two persons or two things that


are not equal
THE PATTERN
(ONE SYLLABLE)

S+TOBE+ADJ+ER+THAN+O
S+VERB+ADVERB+ER+THAN+O

EXAMPLES:

This house is bigger than that one.


Rick runs faster than his brother.

(More than two SYLLABLE)

S+TOBE+MORE+ADJ+THAN+O
S+VERB+MORE+ADVERB+THAN+O

EXAMPLES:

This flower is more beautiful than that one.


Rick speaks English more fluently than his brother.
 
Superlative Degree

Is used to compare that one person or


one thing is more than the others.
THE PATTERN
(ONE SYLLABLE)

S+VERB+THE+ADVERB+EST+O

Examples:

This house is the biggest in this street.


Rick drove the fastest in this country.

(More than two SYLLABLE)

S+VERB+THE+MOST+ADVERB+O

EXAMPLES:

This flower is the most beautiful flower in this garden


Rick speaks English the most fluently in this company 
Rick can write a report the most quickly of all my assistent
NOTE

Use the form (more + adjective) or (the most+adjective) for adjective ending
in the following suffixes: -ed, -ful, -ing, -ish and ous (more/the most useful,
More/the most boring, more/the most continuous)

EXAMPLE
They are more tired than me
They are the most tired workers I’ve ever seen
That film was more boring than this one.
That was the most boring film I have ever seen
When an adjective end in a consonant
+y, change the y to i and add –er or
the –est
For happy-happier/ the happiest,
Funny – funnier/the funniest,
Pretty – prettier/the prettiest
Sunny – sunnier/the sunniest
Examples
Nobody is happier than Maria Elen
It’s the sunniest day this month
The irregular adjective and adverb
