What is a Narrative?

 A narrative is a story, told either in the first


person or the third

 A narrative can be autobiographical or about


another individual

 A narrative can be a work of fact or fiction


 Narratives contain these plot points pictured
on the right
SIX WAYS TO START A NARRATIVE

 You can focus on one of the following to start


your narrative:

 ACTION
 FLASHBACK
 QUESTION
 DIALOGUE
 DESCRIPTION
 SOUND

 Describe the setting (i.e. the place and time)
 Describe the characters involved (i.e. what they look like, how
they act, what their goals are, anything really!)
Early  We call these necessary background details exposition.
Beginning  Every story has a problem. Describe a problem that needs
solving and how your character(s) plan on solving it!
 This is the most action-intensive part of the story
 The character faces his/her biggest challenge: the climax of the
story
The Middle Part:  Describe in detail how the character faced the biggest challenge
Rising Action  NOTE: the challenge doesn’t have to be something
and Climax supernatural! It can be something as simple as facing a difficult
math test

 Wrap up all the events of your story!
 Describe how the character(s) solved the problem
 Describe the character’s “return to reality.” In other words,
Conclusion transition back to the beginning of the story before there was a
problem
 There are SEVERAL ways to end a story
Different ways to
end a story:
Inception had a cliffhanger ending

Toy Story 3 had an emotional ending

This episode of Spongebob had a moral


ending (don’t say bad words)
The Boys (season 3) had a surprise ending
