WHAT IS PIPE
STRESS ANALYSIS ?
PIPE STRESS
ANALYSIS
Any piping system experiences loads and forces and subsequently stresses,
due to multiple factors like fittings own weight, thermal expansion, internal
pressure, wind, earthquake…etc.
Pipe stress analysis is the
study of the piping system
under the critical conditions
to check the following :
• Stresses
• Flexibility
• Deformations
• Design of supports
• Forces at equipment

TYPES OF LOADS &
STRESSES
TYPES OF LOADS
• Piping own weight
• Water weight Internal
Primary • Internal pressure
• Soil weight (buried pipe) Pressure

• Thermal expansion
Thermal
Secondary • Vibrations
• Settlement
Expansion

• Wind Seismic
Occasional • Seismic
Load

PRIMARY VS
SECONDARY LOADS
Primary Secondary
They are usually force driven They are usually displacement driven

They are not self-limiting Almost always self-limiting

Typically, not cyclic in nature Typically, cyclic in nature (Except settlement)

Failure can occur with a single application of load Single application of load almost never causes failure,
rather it usually occurs after number – usually high – of
multiple applications of the load.
Hence, system could be successfully running for years.
However, it is still not properly designed and in risk of
failure
