Introduction to General Studies and African

1
Civilization.
Grammar and Writing
2 Introduction to Grammar

 There are several different varieties of English such as

American English, British English, Australian English etc
 There are other differing types, such as formal vs.
informal English or verbal vs. written English.
 There are also different varieties of English that are
unique to cultural, societal, or professional groups.
3 Introduction to Grammar

 Each variety is appropriate in different situations.

 When you’re talking to your friends, you can
use slang and various cultural references
 If you’re sending a quick casual message—via social
media or texting—you may not worry too much about
capitalization or strict punctuation.
4 Introduction to Grammar

 However, in professional and academic settings you

should use standard English.
 Standard English is one of many different dialects of
English – it just happens to be the most commonly
accepted variety in formal settings
 This is so that people can communicate and understand
each other.
5 Introduction to Grammar

 In many ways Standard English now represents a kind of

global lingua franca (a language adopted as a common
language when speakers native languages are different)
 It has been codified; i.e., recorded in grammars,
dictionaries and style books.
6 Importance of Grammar

 Grammar is the building blocks of any language and

necessary for us to convey what we want to say properly.
 It refers to the rules and regulations that govern spoken
and written language.
 It is through proper grammar that we are able to
communicate in a clear manner that people can
understand.
7 Importance of Grammar

o It is important to fully understand

the basic grammar rules that
govern a language in order to
express oneself clearly.
o Grammar is a set of rules and
conventions that dictate how a
language works.
o These rules are simply tools
that speakers of a language can
use.
8 Importance of Grammar

 There are many grammar rules in English, but the basic

rules refer to sentence structure and parts of speech.
 Good grammar is key to effective communication,
whereas bad grammar detracts from the message or
image you are trying to portray.
 Some people say grammar doesn’t matter, in a society
where texting and using slang terminology is so popular.
9 Importance of Grammar

 However, in the academic world, correct grammar is a

critical skill to master.
 The way you speak and write impacts how people
perceive you.
 Having good grammar helps you come across as more
intelligent. A single mistake isn’t a big ideal, but a litany
suggests poor attention to detail.
10 Importance of Grammar

 Important words become less powerful when filled with

grammar problems.
 At the university, written grammar skills will be necessary
to write your assignments.
 If you plan to succeed in your studies, good
communication skills, and therefore good grammar, are
assets to foster.
11 Content

 You will be trained in essentials of English grammar to help

you develop a strong foundation for effective
communication.
 Our lessons will cover the following:
 Parts of Speech
