GYPSUM
Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate
dihydrate, with the chemical formula CaSO 4·2H2O. It is
widely mined and is used as a fertilizer and as the main
constituent in many forms of plaster, blackboard or sidewalk
chalk, and drywall

DRY WALL (GYPSUM BOARDS)

Drywall, also known as plasterboard or gypsum board is a panel
made of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper.
Drywalls are usually used to make interior walls and partitions.

Drywall advantages
• Light weight systems – 8 to 10 times lighter than conventional systems
like Brick / Block work.
• Faster construction – Five to eight times faster.
• drywall is installed easily
• Superior acoustics performance in terms of insulation with insulation
rating up to 74 db.
• Tested and certified systems to give between ½ – 4-hour fire ratings.
• Smooth finish, aesthetically beautiful crack free surfaces.
• Green and recyclable product.

Drywall disadvantages
• As a rule of thumb, drywall is not resistant to water. When installed in
bathrooms, basements, or other high moisture rooms, its condition
might be affected.
• Without plastering over the drywall, the surface will be prone to
damage. Drywall can be easily damaged since it’s not resistant to
impact.
• Although drywall is installed rather easily, the experts must be
committed techs because drywall finishing must be done correctly, or
you will have problems with the joints or tapes later.

GYPSUM BOARD INSTALLATION
MATERIALS
• Gypsum board
• Screws
• Dowels
• Washers
• Drill
• Metal profiles U and C
• Trimming-knife
• T-square
• An adhesive applicator
• A measuring tape
• A pencil
• A hammer
• Sound insulation tapes

Gypsum Board Installation
• LINE MARKING
• Fixing U-Profiles
U-profiles are mounted to the floor and ceiling with the help of dowels
+ screws + washers using a drill.
• Fixing The Staples
The appropriate staples selected according to the distance between the
cladding wall and the building wall are fixed
to the wall using dowels and screws.
• Installation Works And Insulation
Electrical wiring and plumbing should be done before placing the
panels. For instance, in order to hide the
maintenance of your plumbing or electrical system, you can use
an access panel system.
• Plasterboard Screwing
Fixing the gypsum boards is done to the U and C profiles along the
edges of the gypsum board with the screws using a drill or hammer. When
screwing, make sure that the screw gaps are not more than 30 cm and that
the screws are screwed off properly. When screwing, the screws should not
be closer than 1 cm to the edges of the gypsum board.
• Coating and Finishing Surface
You need to patch holes or fill cracks in the corner. For easier and cleaner
finishing surface, you can use the all-purpose ready mix joint compound for
instance. After the first drying, a second layer of joint compound must be
necessary. Also, note that, depending on temperature and humidity, the
drying time can vary between 12 and 24 hours. To finish, Then, you can start
to paint your gypsum board.

FALSE CEILING
Gypsum board is widely used in false ceiling. They
are attached to the ceiling using a G.I framework. The
installation of Gypsum Board false ceiling is very
economical, convenient and time saving. It gives the
ceiling a clean and elegant look. Gypsum boards can be
cut into any shape such as circles, curves, crisscross
lines etc. to incorporate stylish designs. Gypsum boards
also help in improving the ambient lighting by
incorporating Cove lights or Profile Lights. With an
additional layer of Insulation material such
as Glasswool, Rockwool or Polywool, Gypsum board
false ceiling helps in improving the resistance properties
towards heat, thermal and sound

CASE STUDY
Weldon Church of England Primary School
Gypsum fibre dry lining boards have helped a specialist timber frame
manufacturer make a promising start in a new sector.
Scotts of Thrapston in Northamptonshire have 95 years’ expertise in the
equestrian and garden buildings sector but recently decided to try and break
into the education sector by supplying modular classroom buildings.
They specified 153 of 1200mm x 2400mm x 12.5mm boards for their first
such project, Weldon Church of England Primary School, in their home
county, and have not looked back since, also using fermacell for another
school and an office building.
The panels were used to line the walls and ceilings of a £175,000
replacement for a 20-year-old modular building at Weldon in Corby, where
pupil numbers have doubled to 200+ in just over 40 years, and have been
used throughout the classroom, a group room, lobby, toilets and storeroom.
The 18.5m x 6.5m building, which is also clad in timber and roofed in
coated steel profiled panels, was constructed as a flat pack over two weeks
at Scotts’ production facility in Thrapston, then transported by truck to
Weldon and erected by a team of four men using an all-terrain fork lift truck
in just six weeks during term time.

CASE STUDY
The Portland Collection Gallery
Gypsum fiberboard panels were specified for the new home of
one of the most historically significant private collections of fine
and decorative arts, for their loading capabilities at least.

Some 4,000m2  board was used to dry-line the walls, ceilings,

bulkheads and external soffits of the award-winning gallery,
the new home of the 5,000-strong Portland Collection, on the
historic Welbeck estate in Nottinghamshire.

Designed by Hugh Broughton Architects, better known for the

Halley VI relocatable research station in Antarctica, the £5
million gallery, which exhibits a rarely-shown Michelangelo
drawing and a pearl earring worn by Charles I at his execution, is
located within the historic walls of the so-called Tan Gallop, a
former indoor ¼ mile racehorse training arena.
