5 MOMENTUM
Compare the velocity and the time it takes for the lorry and the car
to stop. Which is harder to stop?
It is much easier to stop the same lorry if it is moving with a low
velocity. Why?
Ball b has deeper cavity

Ball b

Ball b has higher speed

The effect of stopping object is bigger
if the mass and velocity is higher.

The greater the momentum, the

greater the effect of stopping
object.
Every moving object has momentum. Momentum can be
thought of as the tendency of an object to keep on
moving with the same speed in the same direction.
Momentum and inertia are quite connected.

Momentum often indicates the difficulty a

moving object has in stopping. Momentum is
the measure of how hard it is to stop an object.
A fast-moving car has more momentum than a
slower one of the same mass.
According to Newton, the object with less momentum is easier to
stop and give less impact in a collision.

A baseball player must wear a

glove to catch a hard and fast
moving baseball because the ball
has big momentum. It is difficult
to stop the ball and will give
larger painful impact when it hits
the player’s hand.
MOMENTUM is mass x velocity

Vector quantity. SI unit kgms-1

Momentum granny:
(80)(6) = 480 kgms-1
Momentum player 70 kg: Momentum boy:
(70)(4) = 280 kgms-1 (40)(0) = 0 kgms-1
Momentum player 75 kg:
(75)(-3) = - 225 kgms-1
The total momentum of the system will remain
constant if there is no external force acts on the system

Coin A stops, coin B moves forward

Momentum coin A decreases

because its momentum is

Ball A stops, balls B, C, D at rest,
ball E moves upward with the
same height as ball A.
Yes

Ball A and B stop, C at rest, ball

D and E move upward
m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2

The air moves backward

Before: both trolleys at rest. After: both

trolleys moth in opposite direction equal
to the right (mv)
to the left (- mv)

mv + (-mv) = 0

Total momentum before = 0

Total momentum after = 0
→ total momentum before = total momentum after explosion
0 = mv1 + Mv2
-Mv2 = mv1
m1u1 + m2u2 = (m1 + m2 ) v2
(15)(20) + 0 = (15 + 60)v
75v = 300
v = 4 m/s
Total momentum before = total momentum after
0 = momentum bullet + momentum pistol
0 = (0.01)(300) + (1.5) v
1.5 v = - 3.0
v = - 2.0 m/s
-ve: pistol recoil backward.
Inelastic collision
m1u1 + m2u2 = (m1 + m2 ) v2
(4)(m) + 0 = (m + m)v
2mv = 4m
v = 2 m/s
• When a rifle is fired, the bullet
with mass m moves forward
with high speed, v
• A forward momentum is
produced.
• A same momentum but in
opposite direction is produced
by the rifle to recoil the rifle
backward.
• Fan sucked air into a combustion
chamber. Air is compressed until
it becomes hot.
• Karosin fuel is injected into the
chamber.
• An explosion occur and produce
high speed exhaust gas backward.
• A high backward momentum is
produced.
• This will produce a same but
opposite momentum which push
the jet forward.
• Momentum exhaust gas backward
= momentum jet forward
• Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen is
mixed in a combustion chamber.
• The mixture explodes
• The hot gasses moved out the rocket
nozzle at high speed downward.
• Momentum upward produced on the
rocket = momentum downward by hot
gasses.
• Fan pushes air faster backward
to produce a large momentum
backward.
• A same momentum produced
forward. So the boat moves
forward.
• When black liquid is expelled at high
velocity, a large momentum is produced.
• A same momentum produced forward.
So the squid moves forward.
• When the stick is swing high
in the air, it moves with high
momentum.
• This high momentum is
transferred to the golf ball
and it moves further.
• Momentum is produced when the football
player runs.
• The big momentum is transferred to the ball
• Therefore the ball is kicked far away
(0.01)(v) + (2)(0) = (2 + 0.01)4
0.01v = 8.04
v = 8.04/0.01 = 804 m/s
0 = (0.01)(120) + (0.49)V
0.49v = - 1.2
V = - 2.44 m/s
(1.5)(2) + 0 = (1.5 + 1.0)v
3.0 = 2.5v
v = 1.2 m/s
Forward momentum of the man
equal the backward momentum of
the boat.
Momentum lelaki ke depan sama
