My Research on

Puberty

What is Puberty?
Puberty is the process of physical changes
through which a child's body matures into an
adult body capable of sexual reproduction. It is
initiated by hormonal signals from the brain to
the gonads: the ovaries in a girl, the testes in
a boy.
Similairites That Take Place In Both
Boys and Girls During Puberty
• Both boys and girls may get acne. They also
usually have a growth spurt (a rapid increase
in height) that lasts for about 2 or 3 years.
This brings them closer to their adult height,
which they reach after puberty.
• Boys and girls both begin to grow hair under
their arms and their pubic areas (on and
around the genitals).
Differences That Takes Place In Both Boys and Girls
During Puberty
Girls
• Breasts will start developing. This is the first visible
sign that puberty is starting. It’s normal for the left
and right breasts to grow at different speeds. It’s
also common for the breasts to be a bit tender as
they develop. If your child wants a bra, a soft crop
top or sports bra can be a good first choice.
• A growth spurt occurs. Some parts of the
body – like the head, face and hands –
might grow faster than limbs and torso.
This might result in your child looking out
of proportion for a while. On average, girls
grow 5-20 cm. They usually stop growing at
around 16-17 years.
• The body shape will change. For example,
a girl’s hips will widen
Boys
• The hormone testosterone is produced, which stimulates
the testes to produce sperm.
• Your child might start having erections and ejaculating
(releasing sperm). During this period, erections often
happen for no reason at all. Just let your child know that
this is normal and that people don’t usually notice.
Ejaculation during sleep is often called a ‘wet dream’.
• The larynx (‘Adam’s apple’ or voice box) will become more
obvious. Your child’s larynx will get larger and their voice
will ‘break’, eventually becoming deeper. Some boys’
voices move from high to low and back again, even in one
sentence. This will stop in time.

How To Deal Emotions During Puberty?
During puberty your child’s emotions may become
stronger and more intense.Their mood might
change more frequently, quickly and randomly.Your
child may have strong emotions that they've never
experienced before. It’s common for them to feel
confused, scared or angry and not know why. They
also might be more sensitive and become more
easily upset than usual.
Here are some things I did to help me
process and cope with these new emotions:
• Keep calm, listen and acknowledge their feelings
• Help them understand their moods and what they
might be going through
• Maintain clear rules, boundaries and expectations
• Allow them space to process their feelings and be
available when needed

Personal Hygiene Practices That Keeps
The Body Clean During Puberty.
Personal hygiene is particularly important
during puberty as the body begins to
produce more hormones that can increase
the amount of sweat, oil and odour the body
produces. The following things are essential
to maintain optimum health: maintaining a
well-balanced diet. drinking plenty of water.
• Shower or bathe every day. With dry skin,
wash every other day. Use soap and a
washcloth. Start at the top and work down.
Wash the cleanest parts before the germiest
parts (the bottom and feet). After soaping up,
rinse off with warm water.
• Dry the body by patting or gently rubbing. Be
sure to dry between the toes to prevent
stinky feet.
• Use anti-perspirant to reduce sweating
armpits. It works best to apply it to clean, dry
armpits before going to bed every night.
• Use deodorant to reduce armpit odors.
