Lord of Light and Wisdom, thank

you for giving us a mind that can know

and a heart that can love. Help us to
keep learning every day, no matter what
the subject is, for all knowledge leads to
You.
Encourage us when the studies are
hard and when we are tempted to give
up. Enlighten us when our brain are
slow, and let us hold the truth held out to
us.
Amen.
Trigonometric
Ratios
A RATIO is a comparison of
two quantities. For example;
boys to girls
cats : dogs
right : wrong.

In Trigonometry, the
comparison is between sides
of a triangle ( right triangle).
The Six
Trigonometric
Ratios
Objective:
Illustrate the six
trigonometric ratios:
sine, cosine, tangent,
secant, cosecant, and
cotangent.

Calculator Tip
On a calculator, the trig functions are abbreviated as
follows: sine  sin, cosine  cos, tangent  tan

Writing Math
In trigonometry, the letter of the vertex of the angle
is often used to represent the measure of that angle.
For example, the sine of A is written as sin A.
Let’s practice…
Write the ratio for sin A
B Sin A = a
c
c
Write the ratio for cos A
a
Cos A = b
c
C b A
Write the ratio for tan A
Let’s switch angles:
Tan A = a
Find the sin, cos and
b
tan for Angle B:

Sin B = b Tan B = b
Cos B = a
c a
c
