Definition
 Druginformation is the process of providing information
on the safe and effective use of therapeutic and diagnostic
pharmaceuticals.

 The integration of locating, applying and


communicating information concerning Drugs usually
for use by the person in a decision making role of
patient management.

 "The pharmacist identifies, retrieves, evaluates,


interprets, and provides appropriate drug and
pharmacy practice information to achieve safe and
effective patient care."

Drug information service is a formalized
unit with staff and resources dedicated to
providing drug information.

Drug Information Centre (DIC) has a


physical location as opposed to Drug
information Service per se.
Functions of Drug information
1.To respond to drug information questions
eg:
 Drug identification; trade names, generic name
 Drug formulation; tabs, caps, iv
 Therapeutic uses?
 Dosages? Paeds, liver dx, renal dx
 Pharmacokinetics eg metabolism of Drugs in CRF
 ADRs (Adverse Drug Reactions)
 C.Is (Contraindications)
 Drug interactions
 Drug stability, storage conditions
 Safety in pregnancy and lactation

2. Support the Pharmacy and Therapeutics
Committee in Formulary review, by providing
objective , complete reviews of drugs for Formulary
consideration.

 Involves collecting data on drug use, evaluating this
information and assessing mechanism for correcting
prescribing problems
 The program ensures that medication use is Rational,
safe and cost effective
