Key Skills – Writing About Texts
Using P.E.E
Using P.E.E is essential for success in English.
P.E.E stands for:

• Point – make a point

• Evidence – find some evidence to back it up
• Explain – explain what the evidence proves
P.E.E shows that you have read and understood the text in detail. Reading
assessed writing without P.E.E will not gain a grade higher than a level 4.
Using Quotes
Quotes have specific ‘rules’ which must be
followed in your work.
1. Quotation marks must always be used to show that you are
quoting from the text.
E.G. In the second verse the line ‘his neck is dark’ suggests that
Timothy is unclean.

2. Use the P.E.E formula. Remember:

• Point
• Evidence
• Explain
Example Use of P.E.E
Point:
Timothy Winters’ dad is a heavy drinker.

evidence:
‘Old Man Winters likes his beer’

explain:
If his dad is often drunk this could explain why
Timothy is neglected.
Example of writing up
notes
In the fifth verse we discover that
Timothy’s father is a heavy drinker as it
says, ‘Old Man Winters likes his beer’. If
his dad is often drunk this could explain
why Timothy looks neglected and untidy.
