What is a Catalytic Converter?

Introduction
A catalytic converter is an exhaust emissions control device used
in automobiles to reduce the amount of harmful pollutants emitted
into the atmosphere. A catalytic converter's process involves a
series of chemical reactions that take place within a metal or
ceramic honeycomb structure that is coated with a catalyst, which
is typically composed of platinum, palladium, and/or rhodium.

The three main types of harmful pollutants that a catalytic

converter helps to reduce:
• Carbon Monoxide (CO)
• Hydrocarbons (HC)
• Nitrogen Monoxide (NO)
Chemical Equations and Reactions

1.Oxidation of carbon monoxide

(2CO + O2 → 2CO2)
The chemical equation represents a redox reaction in which both
oxidation and reduction processes are involved.

2. Oxidation of hydrocarbons
(HC + O2 → CO2 + H2O)
The chemical reaction is a combustion reaction that involves the
rapid oxidation of hydrocarbons in the presence of oxygen to
produce carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen gas.

3. Oxidation of hydrocarbons
(HC + O2 → CO2 + H2O)
This chemical reaction is a decomposition reaction. This type of
reaction involves the breakdown of a single compound into two or
more simpler compounds or elements.
