Family planning refers to practice that help individuals or
couples to attain certain objectives
 To avoid unwanted births
 To bring about wanted births
 To regulate the intervals between pregnancies
 To control the time at which births occur in relation to
ages of the parents
 To determine the number of children in the family

BARRIER METHODS
 Barrier methods work by physically preventing the
man’s sperm from joining with the woman’s egg
 Diaphragm Cap
 Condoms (Male & Female)
 Spermicides
 Intra-uterine Device (IUD)
Intrauterine Device: IUD
 Put into the womb by a doctor
 Can last for 5 or 10 years
 Can be removed when the woman decides she wants to
get pregnant or at any other time

method of family planning, she puts
hormones in her body that prevent
her from getting pregnant by
 Preventing her body from releasing
an egg
 Making it harder for the sperm to
reach the egg

NATURAL METHOD - PAPPAYA
 The seeds of the papaya could actually serve as an
effective male contraceptive.
 Papaya seeds, taken daily, could cut a man’s sperm
count to zero and was safe for long-term use
 Best of all, the sterility was reversible: If the man
stopped taking the seeds, his sperm count would return
to normal.
PERMANENT METHODS
 The operation for a man is called a VASECTOMY
 The operation for a woman is called a TUBAL
LIGATION
Emergency Family Planning
 If a man and a woman have sex without using any
method of family planning, there are pills that a
woman can take AFTERWARDS to prevent pregnancy,
called “Emergency Contraception”
Acts by
 Temporarily blocking eggs from being released
 Stopping fertilization,
 Keeping a fertilized egg from becoming implanted in
the uterus
Emergency Family Planning
 The emergency contraceptive pill regimen
recommended by WHO is one dose of levonorgestrel
1.5 mg, taken within five days (120 hours) of
unprotected intercourse
 Prevent pregnancy by preventing or delaying
ovulation.
 They may also work to prevent fertilization of an egg
by affecting the cervical mucus or the ability of sperm
to bind to the egg.
Emergency Family Planning
 They are not effective once the process of implantation
has begun, and they will not cause abortion.
 Regimen is 52–94% effective in preventing pregnancy
 95% of expected pregnancies when taken within 24
hours of sex
 85% if taken within 25-48 hours
 58% if taken within 49-72 hours
 The regimen is more effective the sooner after
intercourse
