 Horticulture is the science and art of cultivating( producing)
management( improving), marketing and using of vegetables( fruit, leafy,
root and spices) fruits and ornamental plants.

 It differs from botany and other plant sciences in that horticulture incorporate
both science and aesthetics ( ART).

 Horticulture impacts our lives on a daily basis by providing nutritious fruits

and vegetables.

 Offering visual enjoyment, promoting recreational activities.

 Ornamental Horticulture is the branch of horticulture that deals with

Floriculture and Landscape Horticulture
• Floriculture can be defined as “a specialized branch of horticulture which deals not

only with the cultivation of flowers, foliage, climbers, trees, shrubs, cacti, succulents,

etc., but also with their marketing and production of value-added products from

them”

• Landscape Horticulture : The branch of horticulture that deals with the art and

science of development of out door environment with ornamental plants by

arranging them to beautify a place maintaining natural scenery. It involves

landscape design, construction and management

Overview of Landscape Design
Landscape Design Plan
• Botany is the study of plant science in relation to physiology, structure, genetics,

ecology, distribution, classification and economic importance of the plants

• Horticultural Botany ????

• Ornamental Plants are plants that are primarily grown for their beauty but also

for qualities such as scent , color, shape/form.

Euphorbia ingens
Bromeliad guzmania Caladium bicolor
Purpose of Ornamental Plants
• Economic purpose : Ornamental plants are being grown for domestic as well as for export market.

• Aesthetic purpose:

i. Adds the monitory value of any building/property.

ii. Horticultural therapy - is the new dimension of horticultural sciences to heal the psychic debility
and the science is to use garden, landscape plants, parts of plants, growing activity as tools to
work.

iii. It is being utilized in psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals and physical rehabilitation centers,
homes for elderly, prisons and schools.

• Environmental purpose: Wind break, erosion control, pollution control( carbon sequestration and
Phytoremediation
Classification of Ornamental Plants
Ornamental plants can be classified based on the following:

1. Purpose/use: This is based on the uses as hedge, avenue, spot, groundcover

a. Hedges:Number of shrubs or trees (often similar species) planted closely together in

a line. e.g Duranta erecta, Murraya paniculata, Ixora japonica, Hamelia patens,

Thunbergia erecta

b. Avenue plants: are plants planted along a wide road or pathway lined or on either

side to provide shade or direct traffic e.g Cassia fistula, Polyanthia longifolia
c. Spot plants: are plants used to attract attention to a certain area in Landscape

e.g Boungainvallia graba, Thuja occidentalis, Allamanda cathartica

d. Groundcover: are plants that forms a carpet of low height; these low-

growing plants are usually installed as the final part of landscape construction.

E.g. Rhoe discolour, Portulaca grandis , Plumbago auriculata

e. Grasses: Plants that characteristically have joint stems, sheaths and narrow
blades (leaves) e.g Axonopus compresus, Zoysia tenuifolia, Cynodon dactylon

f. Palm: trees that has straight, tall trunk and many large leaves at the top of the
trunks. E.g Caryota mitis, Cycas revolute, Chamaerops humilis, Chrysalidocarpus
lutensens
g. Cut flowers: are plants grown for the purpose of its flowerbuds( petals) with
some stem(leaf) to be cut from the plant bearing Rose, Chrysanthemum,,
Anthurium, Orchids etc
h. Indoor plants: are plants that require low to medium amount of light( light
intensity) and water to survive e.g Philodendron spp., Zamioculcas zamiifolia,
Spathiphyllum wallisii( Peace Lily), Agloenema,
2.Mode of Propagation : This based on mode of propagation . Propagation can

be done by Sexual method or Asexual method

a.Sexual Propagation : This is propagation of plants through mature seed.

Exaples of ornamental that can be propagated by seeds are Murraya

japonica, Terminalia mentalis, Polyanthia longifolia, Cassia fistula, Tagetes

spp, Araucaria heterophylla, Casuarina equisetifolia, Palms, Catharantus

roseus
b. Asexual/ Vegetative Propagation: This propagation can be done by
making cuttings from the stem, root or leaves of the desired plant. The most
common mode of asexual propagation in ornamental industry is stem
cutting, root division.
• Example of plants with stem cutting are Duranta repens, Acalypha
inferno, Thuja occidentalis, Allamanda cathartica

• Example of plants propagate by root division are Sansevieria trifasciata,

Philodendron cordatum, Asparagus densilorus

• Example of plants propagate by Leaf cutting: Bryophylum pinnatum,

Begonia masoniana, Sanitpaulia ionatha
3 Based on Nature of Growth

a. Annuals plants: are plants that complete their life cycle in one yearor

season e. g Catharantus roseus , Tagetes spp, Chrysanthemum,

Helianthus annus

b. Perennials Plants : are plants that lives or survive more than two years

or two seasons. They survives from one growing season to another

growing season. E.g. all Shrubs( hedge plants, trees)
