providing information to the public online. As a democratizing medium,

supplying different knowledge and interaction; and communication
channels that are used for spreading news.

This has changed the mode of political campaigning. Political matters have
been discussed through various online groups, pages, and web sites; this
helped political candidates to campaign more conveniently and relevantly.

Introduction

Moreover, election campaigns have exhibited a more intense and varied

use of social media to sow disinformation to either support or undermine
certain candidates. In contrast, social media also turned many people into
high-commitment voters. Many are spending their time on social media
to prove they are in the right stance. In addition, diplomacy around the
world has grown less private and more susceptible to public perception as
a result of the use of social media in political processes

Thus, this study will show how the students' exposure to social media

redefines their political engagement and how it influences their political

views. Hence, it is further desired that the result of this study could be a
course for understanding the effectiveness of social media to the students
in terms of politics.

Related Literature

According to Niel Nino Lim (2009), social media platforms, as

emerging political spaces, have paved the way for the re-
conceptualization of political engagement, especially among the
youth. Their participatory counterparts, particularly blogging, social
networking and content sharing, have encouraged more people to be
involved in political issues and have contributed to changing the
mode of protest from streets to cyberspace. Existing Literature,
however, shows a dearth of sociological inquiry on the social
impacts of the Internet, particularly on political engagement.

The social media plays an important role in providing information to the

public on political events, engaging its users and encouraging them to get
involve in offline political activities. (Emruli & Baca, (2011). Social Media
has become vital for political discussions and political participation. Online
activities related politics are useful to encourage youth to participate in
political events (Quintelier & Vissers, 2008). Internet usage, political
knowledge and political participation are associated with another. This trend
is playing a key role in elections, especially in developing countries like
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Internet and Social Media have become
increasingly important for disseminating political information (McAllister,
2015).

According to DellaVigna and Gentzkow 2010, La Ferrara 2015, Enikolopov

and Petrova 2015. There is plentiful evidence that traditional media like
newspapers, radio, and TV have had an important impact on political
outcomes by providing political news and entertainment, both in their
infancy and after they have become widespread. To the extent that online
media resemble traditional media, one should expect their persuasion effects
to mirror those of traditional media. However, certain features of the new
media—of social media, in particular—distinguish them from traditional
media. This review focuses on these features, as they may affect politics in
ways that explain some of the recent trends

Filipino youth's responses to current societal and governance problems, such as

corruption, child violence, armed conflict, and poverty, seemed to be muted. Many
have attributed the youth's silence to an implicit sense of apathy and skepticism or
disbelief (Medina & Diestro, 2009). According to Velasco (n.d.), in her
documentation of reports from 1996 to 2002 on Filipino youth's political
participation, reported that the youth's less than positive attitude towards being
responsible voters, their minimal participation in the form of social involvement, or
their lack of knowledge on the structures of governance, have remained unchanged.
The decision to remain uninvolved was reportedly made out of concern that their
participation would have a negative impact on their school results. According to
Velasco’s study, they may have also believed that their participation in political
activities would make no difference, or that they would be labeled as communists if
they did.

Price, V., Zaller, J. (1993) states that political knowledge indicates facts about
political systems in which individuals can remind memories to understand and
learn events. Research measuring political knowledge on social media is mainly
related to current events.

The relation between social media use and political knowledge has a proven track
record (McLeod et al., 1999; Mcleod & McDonald, 1985) and that media generated
information and how users receive news determining the political knowledge
acquired (Ekström, M., Shehata, A. 2018). It happens by presenting enough news
about current issues and politics, encouraging users to signalize those related to
politics (Boomgaarden, H., de Vreese, C. 2013). An active search is the first step
toward reading up news and encouraged by surveillance to collect a knowledge
user environment (Eveland, W. P. 2001).
