THEMES IN ANIMAL FARM

 The theme is the central insight in human life provided

by a piece of literature. Themes can be ambiguous or
even contradictory .A theme may be stated or implied.
Themes may be categorized as major and minor. A
major theme is an idea that the author uses recurrently
and it becomes the most important idea in the story. A
minor theme is an idea which may appear only
periodically. An author express themes in four central
ways:
 It is expressed by the way the author makes us feel by sharing feelings of the main
character we also share ideas that go through his mind.
 Themes are presented in thoughts and conversations of characters.
 Themes are suggested through characters. The main character usually illustrates
the most important theme of the story. A good way to understand the theme is to
ask yourself what does the main character learns throughout the duration of the
story.
 The actions and events are used to suggest the theme. People normally express
ideas and feelings through their actions. The author thinks about how the action
will express a theme.

 False Allegiance
 Attitudes to Education
 Power and Authority/ Abuse of Power
 Some words that capture abuse of power and authority in this novel: tyranny and
dominance. Tyranny and dominance are first displayed by the humans when they
exercise their power over the animals.
 Mr. Jones and his men abuse this power through their careless approach to
looking after the animals that was not present. This showcases more dominance
than tyranny, due to the cold indifference the animals show.
 On the other hand, the pigs’ abuse of their power and authority is much worse
than that of the humans. In their abuse of power there is a level of tyranny
experienced by the animals that was not present under Jones’ rule. The animals
become the humans they originally condemned.
 This tyranny is employed by Napoleon as he assumes absolute power on the farm
(has a headquarters), becoming a dictator, elicits false confessions out of the
animals and execute them.
 Napoleon’s trained dogs also assist him in instilling fear among the animals and
place him in a position of exclusivity.
 There is no compassion on his part when he expels his opponent, Snowball. He
compels Squealer to spread propaganda, change the commandments and
promote his agenda of dominance.
 With Napoleon’s skewed leadership practices, the commandments and
revolutionary ideals become a dream of the past and are soon replaced by food
shortages, overwork, violence and death.
 1. Compare the leadership of Old Major, Napoleon and Snowball
 2. Identify and discuss THREE strategies employed by Napoleon to maintain
power and assert himself over the other animals.
