HISTORY ANSWERS CONCLUSION

HISTO
RY
Catholicism in the Philippines has a long history that dates back to the 16th century, when Spanish colonizers brought the religion to the islands.

It has been a major influence on Filipino culture, politics and identity. According to some sources, about 80% of Filipinos are Catholic today
The arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, who claimed the islands for Spain and baptized some of the local rulers and their subjects.
He also planted a cross on Cebu island, which is considered the first Christian symbol in the Philippines4.

● The establishment of the first diocese in Cebu in 1565, followed by Manila in 1579. The Spanish friars were in charge of evangelizing
and administering the parishes, as well as holding large tracts of land.
They also faced resistance and conflicts from some native groups, Muslim sultanates and Chinese immigrants4.
● The execution of three Filipino priests, Jose Burgos, Mariano Gomez and Jacinto Zamora, in 1872 by the Spanish authorities for allegedly
supporting a mutiny. They became martyrs and symbols of the nationalist movement that sought independence from Spain1.
● The transfer of sovereignty from Spain to the United States in 1898, after the Spanish-American War. The Americans promoted a
separation of church and state and tried to reduce the power and influence of the Catholic Church.
They also bought and redistributed some of the lands owned by the friars to Filipino farmers1.
● The visit of Pope Paul VI in 1970, who was the first pope to set foot on Philippine soil.
He canonized Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint, and celebrated Mass with millions of people at Luneta Park in Manila2.
● The visit of Pope John Paul II in 1981 and 1995, who drew huge crowds and inspired many Filipinos with his messages of peace, justice
and human dignity. He also beatified Pedro Calungsod, another Filipino martyr, and declared 1991 as the year of evangelization in Asia2.
● The visit of Pope Francis in 2015, who expressed his solidarity with the victims of Typhoon Haiyan and urged Filipinos to protect their
families, environment and poor people. He also canonized Joseph Vaz, a missionary from Sri Lanka who worked in the Philippines
