◇ Nelson Mandela was a South African political leader
who fought for most of his life against apartheid, a

◇ He was born on July 18, 1918 in a small village in the

Mandela grew up in a deeply

discriminated against and
subjugated by whites. He
became involved early in the
fight against racial injustice
and became one of the main
leaders of the African
National Congress (ANC), a
political party that defended
the rights of black people in
South Africa.
