RACEWAY SYSTEM

Prepared by
KHALEELUR RAHMAN
PURPOSE OF RACEWAY

Raceways serve a crucial function in electrical systems. A raceway serves as a physical passage for
electrical cables & wires, from the Electrical services & moves cables & wires from the feeder to all the
sub-feeders & up to the reach final device.
There are various types of race way

 Conduits - Minimum size used 20 mm 3/4”

 Cable tray - Minimum thickness for less than 300mm tray 1.5 mm.
excess of 300 mm width shall be a thickness of 2.0mm& hot dip galvanized
steel

 Cable Trunking - Minimum thickness not less than 1.2 mm & hot dip galvanized steel

 Cable Ladder - minimum thickness 2.0 mm & hot-dip galvanized steel.

 Busduct (will submit as separate presentation)

Conduits & Fittings
A conduit is used to protect electrical wiring and to route wires within commercial and residential
structures. conduit provides very good protection to enclosed conductors from impact, moisture, and
chemical vapours.
Electrical conduit made of different types mentioned below…

 RIGID PVC CONDUIT

 Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

 Rigid Steel Conduit (RSC)

 Liquid-Tight Flexible Metal Conduit (LFMC)

RIGID PVC CONDUIT
UPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride) conduit is utilized for
concealed (embedded) in walls and slabs, as well as underground
installations, also much more cost-effective than other types of conduit
materials.

 UPVC is resistant to corrosion, and chemical damage.

 UPVC conduits will not rust, rot, or degrade over time.
 easy to install because they are lightweight
 Very cost-effective because they are easy to install
 UPVC conduits can withstand temperatures up to 75 degrees

PVC UPVC
Polyvinyl chloride Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride
Two kinds of plasticizers are used to make the material flexible Unplasticized doesn’t have any extra material
(BPA –Bisphenol, Phthalates)
Not more stronger UPVC more than stronger than PVC as a Rigid plastic
 Pull boxes must be equipped with conduit that is longer than
15 meters and has more than two bends.

ELECTRICAL METALLIC TUBING (EMT)
Electrical metallic tubing refers to steel-based durable enclosures. Used for cable &
wires to move from one point to another point. EMT is commonly referred to as a thin-
wall conduit. Installed in accordance with In dry, damp, and wet locations and protect
the wires from impact, moisture, and chemical vapours.
 Only standard manufactured fitting and accessories shall be used.
 All conduits shall be connected with the respected containment
(Tray, Trunking) by reaching the electrical & telecom panel.

Rigid Steel Conduit (RSC)

Rigid steel conduit(Galvanized)is the heaviest

and thickest wall of electrical conduits, commonly
used for electrical wiring in commercial and industrial
buildings.
 commonly used outdoors & in corrosive areas.
 Protects against impact at all temperatures
 Provide Physical protection.
 exceptional corrosion resistance & fire resistance.
 RGS is that it protects sensitive equipment from electromagnetic
interference.
 RGS conduit connection between the box shall be connected with
hexagonal-headed, heavy-duty, long-threaded brass bushes. (to avoid
damage from sharp edges)
 Conduit fixing saddle shall be spacer type.
 Conduit support intervals 1.5 meters in isolated positions or 1 mts intervals
inaccessible situations.
 Junction box shall be installed every 12 mts length of the conduits.
 Exposed conduit threads and damaged or rusty portions of metal conduits
LIQUID-TIGHT FLEXIBLE METAL CONDUIT (LFMC)
Liquid tight flexible metal conduits are used to cover cables which
need both flexibility and protection from moisture. An electrical
installation that is exposed to the outside can cause potential
problems. UV rays and other outdoor elements can cause breakage
and other types of damage. Using a liquid-tight flexible conduit can
protect cables and wires from sunlight, extreme temperatures,
moisture and other outdoor elements, extending their life and
preventing damage.

 Flexible conduit’s maximum length shall be used 1000 mm (1mts) in

the required location.

 The construction Expansion joint side also installs liquid tight

conduit as required length.

 The liquid tight conduit used for which is subject to vibration or

thermal expansion.
Trunking
A trunking is an enclosure provided for the protection of
cables which is normally square or rectangular in cross-section,
having one removable side. Trunking may be thought of as a more
accessible conduit system and for industrial and commercial
installations it is replacing the larger conduit sizes & Using trunking
systems together with conduit systems offers more convenience
and flexibility.
 Cable trunking shall be single or multi-compartment as per site
conditions.
 The trunking end shall be closed with an end cab.
 Tinned copper earth straps must be fitted at each joint of the
metal cable trunking and end of the trunk connected to the
electrical room(or) Telecom Earthing Bus bars.
Cable Tray
Cable trays are mechanical support systems that can support
electrical cables used for power distribution, control, and
communication. They are the perfect solution for running large
quantities of power or data cables overhead or under raised floor.
There are two types and this project uses perforated & outdoor flange-
type.
The sizes of the cable trays are based on the number and size of
cables laid on the cable trays plus 40% space for future capacity.
Cables laid on cable trays shall be spaced twice their overall diameter

Perforated Cable Trays:

A perforated cable tray has holes on the bottom sheet and side rails
for laying LV and ELV cables for distribution.

Non-Perforated Cable Trays:

A kind of cable tray that is non-ventilated. These are characterized as
durable metallic with
indicated hard metal cover surfaces. Suitable in telecommunication
and electrical wires applications.
 cable trays shall be heavy-duty and manufactured from
hot-dip zinc-coated galvanized steel perforated type
with return flange.
 Galvanizing coating shall be maintained at 350 g/m²
 All fitting shall be the same specification as the cable
tray finish and same manufacturer.
 Site fabrication shall not be permitted.
 Cable trays and accessories thickness not less than
1. 1.5 mm up to 305 mm width cable tray.
2. 2.0 mm above 305 mm and up to 900 mm in width.
 All hangers, supports, threaded rods, etc. shall be
finished by hot-dip galvanizing.
 All fixation hardware (bolts, nuts, washers, etc.) shall be

vertically and supported at maintained distances of 1.5
meters.
Cable Ladder

Can support heavy cables, cable bundles and long support spans.
Cables can enter and exit anywhere along the span. Ladders
provide free airflow, which is essential to avoid overheating of
cables. An advantage of cable ladder

1. Rungs allow for ease of tying down cables in vertical or horizontal

runs.

2. Cables easily exit or enter through the top or bottom of the tray.

3. Enables maximum airflow to help dissipate heat produced in

current-carrying conductors.
4. Tinned copper earth continuity straps shall be provided at every
joint of the ladder & finally connect with the electrical room
grounding system earth bar.
